Has anyone else heard about this???
Unauthorized, warrantless law enforcement surveillance and then the data is being sold to who knows who. What the hell???
Heard about it this morning on the radio. They started using license plate readers and went from there. Because there wasnt a law against it, they didnt bother to worry about it.
Yep, SCDMV did the same thing with our drivers license info some years ago before they were exposed and forced (supposedly) to stop selling our personal information.
Unfortunately driving is a privilege and no expectations of privacy is attached to this act or related. It stinks and i’m no longer surprised on the wasted resources used for the “war on terror”. Meanwhile the Gate is wide open.
There are differing views on this practice and its legality. Some, me included, view this a violation of our constitutionally protected rights against unreasonable search at a minimum. Data storage regulations and selling or passing of this information should be left to the legislature of the states, not the whims of some law enforcement agency. The legality of these cameras has been questioned for years.
See these two articles below:
This is just my opinion on this and as always we can just agree to disagree.
Selling this information was definitely not what this tool was intended for and I’m definitely against it.
But it’s a very valuable tool for LE, with the ability to run tags so quickly gives LEO’S a fighting chance for finding that abducted child or felony suspect that just shot someone in a robbery.
Personally i believe oversight for all this information should be handed to a 3rd party civilian group.
It’s been proven our federal government isn’t responsible enough to do this or lately even make good law enforcement decisions.
I was a 3rd gen LEO and never thought a time would come when I had to second guess our federal gov. But here we are.
I agree that the scanners have a utility in certain and limited situations. I also think that the technology exists or could be developed to scan for a certain tag while at the same time rejecting AND deleting any not remotely related tags. Limit the scanners to an actual crime and do not try to produce a crime or revenue.
Looks like I’ll be sending a few bucks to South Carolina Public Interest Foundation support the lawsuit that will shed some light on this abuse.
And they wonder why some people shout idiocy like “defund the police” and call them “pigs!” Our public servants cannot expect respect when they flagrantly disrespect citizens’ rights.
Since the “government” has become corrupted to the core and they treat honest citizens like criminals…
Intercourse them and go ALL IN as a criminal.
The d-rats love criminals - give 'em what they want.
