Steel or brass?

I know it’s been discussed before, but I’m looking for ammunition and the only thing available is cheap steel cased ammunition. I figured there’d be better build quality that would make shooting steel cased easier and safer for newer AR platforms. Just checking to see if there are any updates on this matter.

We are in the midst of an ammo panic. I imagine by the end of the year things will slow down and get cheaper.

There is no real difference in how they will shoot. Though Tula has an abysmal record for reliability they tend to load it weaker

Wolf/Golden Tiger - go nuts! I run it all the time and have for years.

If you can afford brass, stick with it

As for those who think this is going away, history shows us differently

Buy ammo when you can afford, it’s too late to say buy between elections rather, buy it, as much and as good as you can afford now- I’ve lived through 5 ammo/gun/scares - this is very different

No harm in using steel cased ammunition, go for it. Yes the barrel will wear out faster however the savings you made by using steel cased ammo you can buy multiple new barrels.

See, I’ve never noticed any increased barrel wear with steel cased/bimetal jacketed ammo in either nitrided or chrome lined barrels. Now it could be an issue with an unlined/untreated barrel like a budget 4140 AR barrel, or an older Zastava M70, but I doubt that most folks are shooting enough and in the necessary volume in one sitting to notice.

I hear people say that steel cases can tear up extractors, but the steel used in the construction of the cases is not anywhere close to being as hard as the 8620 or C-158 that the extractor is made out of. So increased parts wear or breakage shouldn’t be a concern for anyone nowadays, unless you built your gun out of some real bottom of the barrel Wish sh*t.
