Whats so bad about Olight?

I know there has been talks and discussions about olight before and im just wondering if anyone has actually had issues out of their baldr, valkyrie, odin, etc and what you thought was so bad about them? Ive used them on several builds and have not had any issues (yet…)…interested to hear about your experiences wether it be good or bad

i do not know. unless its just brand bashing… i’ve wondered this before as well. I dont even know how much they run…

if its dependable, and fairly long lasting, i say run it. but if its cheap and easily damaged or easily kills batteries, or any other number of failure issues then dont.

Some of the early ones were known for exploding. One apparently even killed someone.

Much of it is probably also brand whoring. I prefer streamlight myself. But plenty of surefire, etc. folks out there.

I’m a fan of streamlight and surefire, but you know i would try olight just as much as the next guy but i realize that folks would be skittish when the product explodes and kills somoene. I do also realize the longer away from that incident we get the betterthat their product should be getting, and thus every company has issues sooner or later, its how they recover from the issues that makes me decided if im going to ever give them a shot again.

This is why you’ve always disliked Olights?
One light. One incident.

“The man who was severely injured when a flashlight exploded in his mouth earlier this week has died”

“Gessner said Joyner was looking under the hood and bent down for a closer look. He got close to the vehicle’s battery and the flashlight exploded.”

Would you feel comfortable popping a Streamlight in your mouth and touching a car battery with it?

Side note. I still miss my AA keychain Olight I picked up at a gun show. Dang battery swelled up and leaked inside after I lost it under my seat in the car and a 100 plus degree day took its life.

Another side note. RIP to that poor dude that died from a flashlight exploding in his mouth :frowning_with_open_mouth:

Well from what i have gathered on that story the battery arc’d and that was that. It was a tragedy and shouldnt have happened but it wasnt about issues with the light itself that caused the terrible issue. Im sure there are issues with some of the earlier models as with any company that is trying to gain ground in this industry

Ive been a streamlight fan long before olight came around. There were also plenty of issues when olight first came on the scene. My major hangup is the magnetic charging. I just dont want to do that as i was already in the habit of regularly checking/changing Batteries.

The valkyrie takes 123a’s. Have new surefires in it as we speak

I think a lot of it has to do with us being creatures of habit. You know you buy something it works and your happy with it. Why change.

I was about to buy an Olight for my AR, but I am just a little bit more partial to Streamlight! My son has an Olight Odin Mini on his AR and it is decent light…I wouldn’t hesitate to run one but I just like the looks of the Streamlight a bit better. Both are about the same price.

If it works it works but I have never been a fan of the because of pressuring influencers to pedal the brand, and over the years many influencers that worked with them have ditched them. People have different theories on gear but I try to stick to gear the military uses, 50% it works and 50% brand clout, SureFire is always the gold standard.

I have wondered about Olight for a while. I have one of their flashlights and has ran great. I think I heard they are made in China and that is one of the knocks but… Not sure
