Is the main selling point that they’re quite a bit less expensive than a PSAK-47? It seems to fill a niche, but I’m still trying to figure out if it’s something I really “need” ( ).
Are they able to shoot the inexpensive steel cased ammo without issues? Is Russian ammo getting blocked from being imported?
I’m just becoming infatuated with one - mostly because I have some ammo that I bought cheap for my Yugo SKS a long while back. Also, the threaded barrel is 5/8-24, which is compatible with equipment I have to wait a few months for. I’m also curious about barrel length (8.5" vs. 10.5" vs. 16"), but that can wait…
I own a KS-47 pistol with a 10.5in barrel. Mine has been nothing but fun to shoot at the range. Also, serves as my primary truck gun. Stop asking yourself why and just get one. You wont regret it brother.
There are a lot of reasons to grab one. For me, I have a ton of AK magazines and ammo so that was good for compatibility. I have a two 10.5 inch barrel versions and I they are my current favorite things to shoot. I love the modularity and ergonomics of the AR platform. Don’t worry about the Russian ammo ban too much. A lot of other countries manufacture x39 specifically, and PSA is going to help fill that void in the market too which is pretty smart on their part.
A big reason behind it was the love for the AR platform, the love for 7.62x39, and the crappy feeding issue that come from the AR style magazine because of the straight shoot in the magwell. So, easy fix, get rid of the magwell. And there’s no sense in redesigning the wheel, so make it to use AK style magazines. They are everywhere, and they work. Now you can have the ergonomics and most of the same controls for the AR15, while using the AK mags and ammo.
As for steel case, they should work, but it really depends on the ammo. Steel case ammo has a higher tendency to be “out of spec” than brass. So there is no way for us to guarantee it will work.
The reasons, at least for me, were easy. You get the modularity of the AR platform, the power of the 7.62x39 cartridge, and the simple cool factor (much like having an AK platform in 5.56 NATO). As others have stated this has become my favorite platform to use, so much so that I assembled a 16" rifle with a side charger upper to go with the PSA 10.5" pistol I purchased from the factory. Both are a joy to shoot, though don’t expect 5.56 recoil, and I can’t tell you when I last took out an AR15 to shoot. There are so many ways to furnish, mod, and tinker with this platform to truly make one “yours”. They are a blast…BUT be aware that PSA has a lot of irons in the fire and product and part availability can be very spotty. There is availability right now, but that doesn’t guarantee there will be in a week, a month, or sometimes even longer. Expect major periods (read whenever there is a new product release, Dagger, JAKL, new AK gen) of time where parts availability will be scarce as PSA will be focused on everything but the KS platform… at least it will feel that way.
Overall, great platform and well worth the money, but be ready for possible frustration with supply.
Totally agree with everyone. I love my KS-47. I bought it during the beginning of the pandemic because ammo was $4.99 box. I quickly fell in love with this gun. Accurate, light weight, modularity of the AR and hard hitting 7.62x39 ammo. I shoot only cheap surplus steel cased ammo…with unparalleled reliability. Yes that…”lack of bolt hold open” on the last round….it’s an AR thing. You will get used to it quickly and your manual of arms will be so good…you might even want an AK later to share those AK magazines and ammo with. ….you’ll have so much fun……it gets contagious. Be careful. You’ll be spending more $ $ at PSA.

The biggest selling point for me was the ability to mount an optic on it. With an AK you either mount to the dust cover and never be able to trust the zero, or you buy an expensive side saddle contraption.
Plus you get compatibility with all of the Ar15 aftermarket goodies like triggers, stocks, grips, etc.
