Will next JAKL be 308 win or 7.62 NATO

Hi Team PSA.
As “308” is often used to describe both the Win and NATO (7.62x51) cartridges, and the fact that I have lots of NATO rounds to feed my FALs - I’m curious to know what, exactly, the new JAKL be eating?
Thanks!

Will probably be 308 due to the pressures.

You can shoot 223 in a 556 barrel because a 556 barrel can handle the higher pressures. You shouldnt shoot 556 in a 223 barrel (hence why the Wylde chamber was developed).

Thr opposite is true of 308/7.62. Shoot 7.62 in a 308 barrel but shouldnt shoot 308 in a 7.62 barrel.

Yeah. That’s why all my ARs have Wylde chambers. One less thing to worry about :+1:

I couldn’t recall the 308/7.62 rule - so thanks for the reminder. Guess I’ll be GTG when the JAKL rolls around :sunglasses:

yeah to my knowledge its going to be a 308. so we should be good to go on the shooting of 7.62x51 without any issues.

Aren’t .223 only chambers/barrels all but defunct now? Plus I think the pressure fear was overblown and never turned out to be true regardless.

You can do that for sure, but it is not recommended to do it too often.

Most chambers have gone to wylde. As for pressure, 308 is usually 62k psi. 7.62x51 is 50k psi. Thats a roughly 25% difference.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a .223 only rifle of any kind.

correct… which is why its fine to shoot 7,.62x51 in a 308 chamber without worry.

@rcanboy27 why wouldnt you do it too often?

Sorry for the late response, my frenchie is in heat and I am dealing with my male dog, he be camouflaging dressing like a stuff animal trying to fool me and dig his nuggets in the sauce. Anyways, when I first built my .308 I researched a lot about this two projectiles and one of the articles said that it was fine to shoot it, but it takes a toll on the barrel, the article went in details about pressure etc. I do it, but I do not go crazy. Maybe the info was wrong maybe not, I just stick with the .308 projectile. I was field artillery so I am a safety freak. I still do PCC PCI before any fishing trips, range trip, boat trip etc.

first, thanks for your service. second, there is nothing wrong with being crazy on safety. I dont think i’ve really ever bought 7.62x51 myself, everything ive ever baught was 308… and all rifles i’ve owned that fire 308 are chambered soley for 308… so i like to think im pretty well safe on things.
however it is nice to know i can shoot 7.62x51 if i needed to.
