ZPAP M70 vs PSAK-47 GF5

Okay, I can only have one. Which of these is the better buy?

Everyone likes PSA because their customer service is amazing, as is their warranty. However, if you ask the AK community, they say the ZPAP never needs customer service because it will never break.

I can only afford one. Which do I pick and why?

LOL. Yeah, I kinda figured. Someone also told me that the ZPAP is boat-anchor heavy.

I would always recommend….when available to get an Eastern EUROPEAN AK.
Today we are fortunate to be able to buy Eastern European AKs……but that day will come to an end……probably sooner than later. When they do impose a ban on importing AKs ….the value of the Eastern European AK will double or triple instantly. I always think about value when buying a new gun….Will I get my money back if I sell it 1 or 2 years from now ?

  1. If you go cheap…….you will save a lot of money….that you can use to buy other stuff or ammunition……but if you decide to sell it later…your likely to lose money on your investment.
  2. If you spend extra money on one that is worth more….you won’t have the extra money……you will likely have to save more to get those accessories and ammo……but a good pedigree AK will resell without a loss of money……and if you don’t pimp it out too far beyond it’s original parts, your likely to profit from it later.
  3. You can ALWAYS buy an American built AK. There are plenty of great American AKs….PSA’s are a great Shooters.

Decision is yours….if you don’t want to invest in an Eastern European or your wallet tells you NO…Get an American made……but do your homework before plunking down your money on a new American AK. Not all are created equal.

If you can afford it……buy the best you can afford Eastern European AK. It’s an instant collectors item. Even the venerable Hungarian WASR-10 value will sky rocket when the imports “Dry up”. You’ll love it. You can always buy an American AK ……anytime later.

Note: ZPAP are great AKs….but if you didn’t know…parts for the ZPAP are not interchangeable with most of the rest of the worlds AKM. ZPAP’s are made very “heavy duty” and are a little bigger and heavier than their AKM brothers. That said, the AK is already a heavier gun compared to the AR…the ZPAP being a little heavier. Great guns though.

Look through the AK Pictures thread on the forums and dream about what you like and what you don’t like so much ……then go out and make your dreams come true. This is supposed to be fun.

BTW I have PSA AK 104 /w 12.5 inch barrel…and I love it….but my WASR-10 /w a 16 inch barrel is lighter in weight and handles better……but I still prefer my AK104.

Point that I am making is if you have a chance……shoot as many different AKs as you can try. Each has their own characteristics. Decide what you like and what you want. Unlike the AR……AKs are NOT created equal.

GF3… it doesn’t need customer service but i got great service anyways… nitride barrel so this thing can live up to the reputation of low maintenance.

Personally, I would prefer a WASR over a Yugo, and a Arsenal over either one of them. I have seen enough PSAs that I would take one over a Yugo and probably even over a WASR.

I had a ZPAP M70. Very well made rifle but heavy for what it was. Didn’t like the stock; I couldn’t scrunch down low enough to get a good cheek weld so I traded it. Now I have a PSA AK103 and a GF3. Both guns are rock solid and excellent shooters after hundreds of rounds.

I won’t knock the Zastava but I’ll take my PSA AKs over them any day of the week. :sunglasses:

I’ve tried a WASR. I was definitely not impressed with the quality. Terrible rifle.

Went with the ZPAP. Gonna have to yank the compliance furniture, they add about 3 pounds to the weight of the rifle. I’m figuring on making a Khyber Pass replica.

WASRs are rough but they do work

Don’t tell the wife, husband, girlfriend or whatever you identify with these days   and get both! Throw in an Arsenal SAM7SF-84E for good measure! :muscle::+1:

Some thoughts:

  • “it will never break” - I’ve seen a lot of government contract equipment that was billed as unbreakable, but I’ve never seen something a private couldn’t break. I agree that there are tiers of reliability and ruggedness. But color me skeptical on “never”.
  • As long as it might need service, even if it takes extensive use before that becomes an issue, it’s worth considering whether there are readily available parts, and capable gunsmiths familiar with the model nearby.
  • If the servicable lifetime of the weapon is 20K rounds, and you’ll only ever use 2500, maybe you don’t care about replacement parts
  • If you want aftermarket accessories that fit your rifle, availability could be a factor.

All the same, I have both an Izhmash and a PSA AKM pattern rifle. Due to the overall reliability of the platform, I have a hard time seeing when I’d need to get more than field strip level service to keep either of them running.
