I have ordered a PSA lower but want to build my upper. Is there a good step by step guide out there?
Yes, plenty on YouTube. Uppers are much easier than lowers IMO. If you are building a stripped upper (no FA or dust cover installed), I recommend the Strike Industries dust cover. By far the simplest to install. Also, make sure you have a good vise, barrel blocks (or a reaction rod of some sort) so you can install the muzzle device without sheering your index pin.
This is a pretty decent step by step upper build. Some of the more “exotic” tools can be substituted for more common household tools. Everyone is different but I would much rather crank out lowers all day then build an upper. The last three or four uppers I’ve just bought complete from PSA and changed out a few things.
