Bolt Lug Deformation

I’ve put about about 2000rds give or take thru my KS-47ii. I am starting to see deformation on the back side of the “rounded” lug right next to the extractor. There is some peening and mushrooming that is visible on the backside of the lug as well as the edge of the lug nearest the extractor is scraped/galled a little leaving a bit of a sharp edge. Anybody have any clues as to what is causing this or have experienced this before?

Steel not properly hardened?

That actually is normal “break in wear”. Sometimes it is caused by a slightly tighter headspace, but it all depends on the tolerance levels. If you like, I can point you to similar posts on other forums that actually show it is normal. You can take a needle file to the sides and opening of the lugs if you like to smooth them, but don’t touch the back flat part.

I have a KS 47 with similar “round count”.
I’ve never examined the bolt lugs this closely……but now, looking at them……all of my lugs have similar wear on them.
It IS without a doubt….the most reliable best shooting of the AR’s that I have. It is wear…that is different from the other parts of the bolt & lugs.
That said……I have no reason to concern myself with it. The gun operates very well. I probably would have exceeded 3K by now…but for the new PSA-AK-104 that has knocked the KS-47 off of its throne. I still have a lot of love for my KS-47….but my AK is the new king of the gun safe. Unfortunately I may never see excess wear on those lugs…because of the AK.
Thanks for the post…… I ll keep an eye on it….but really mine is running like a Singer-Sewing-Machine.

I would suggest a backup bolt anyway just cuz bolts get beat up and need replacing sometimes. Get an extra bolt, put it in your BCG and check headspace, and function. Personally I would run the new bolt and keep the older bolt as an emergency spare. But that’s just me, I like new shiny things :star_struck:

When I first bought my KS-47…. I read and watched as many reviews as I could. All the reviews were positive…….with one warning !..…watch out for the broken “extractor”. I’ve seen reviews where extractors are breaking after a few hundred rounds……and some failed after excess of 3K rounds. One of the first things I purchased was an extra bolt….which I keep in my KS-47 pistol grip storage compartment. I’ve have about 3K on my gun now…. I would love to get another 3K on it without a failure…but if/when the day arrives…. I have a spare so I can keep on shooting.
Love my PSA-KS-47

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn’t too too worried about it but I wanted to know the deal. Now, how to get ahold of one of these hallowed spare bolts you guys keep talking about.

We re-worked the KS-47 bolt this summer because of the common issue we were having with the Extractor. I dont have an ETA on when the new ones will hit the shelves, but they are coming. Then we can get back to spreading the joy of the KS-47 again. When I hear of an ETA, I’ll make sure to post it so people can be aware.

Did you acquire the extra bolt from PSA or find another 7.62x39 bolt from another manufacturer? I’d like to have the same setup.

I saw one at a gun show & bought it immediately….well after negotiating a discount.

I contoured the locking lugs to match the PSA x39 bolt lugs. It rides in my pistol grip….waiting for the day it might be needed.

Finally got 2 of the TC-E extractors from PSA on order but they sold out fast . It seems that tool raft has been purchased by PSA and they are making the ks47 BCGs .

PSA doesn’t own Toolcraft, but they have a good relationship. Toolcraft is an OEM bcg supplier for many AR companies.

Beowulf bolt diameter .445

7.62 x39 .447 or maybe .445

Anybody try swapping BCG’s from a Beowulf to an AK-AR15 ?

Same diameter, maybe the same BCG.

Though the Beowulf bolt takes a lot more foot-pounds.

Just bought the new BCG for the KS47 but was wondering if I purchased the new TC—E extractor when it comes in stock can it be installed on the old hybrid BCG or is there a design difference. Thanks

Yes the extractor will work on the old hybrid bolt. I have one of the new extractors and from what I’ve seen it was more a re-profiling of the extractor claw than anything else.

Thanks for the info.

I have more or less the same problem except with a round count of around less than 500 using off the shelf ammo. I am not an expert on the wear and tear of the AR but even the M4’s that we have in the Army do not have this sort of wear. I just noticed this after shooting my KS-47 for the second time and have noticed it upon a teardown for cleaning. There is definitely unusual wear on the mating surfaces between the bolt face and the barrel extension. I’m worried that the lugs on the bolt or the barrel extension will eventually shear off/fail. There is also an indentation on the buffer from the retaining pin.

P.S. Is there an aftermarket bolt that anyone would recommend?

That indention on your buffer is from the buffer moving too fast. You might want to jump up to an H2.

I am going to get it sent in to PSA, trying to not “modify” anything in the case that it voids the warranty.
