I agree with DeSantis’ statements, his premise and his intentions but not the decision that he has reached. There’s line that needs not to be crossed by the Executive Branch of any State: The Rule of Law.
When the Executive Branch of one State decides that it’s going to ignore the ROL and refuse extradition to protect a political affiliate from a political opponent in another State who they claim is abusing the ROL, then they become every bit as bad as the corrupt DA who is abusing the ROL to engage in unjust prosecution. States need to follow their laws. All of them. Including their established extradition policies. In extradition cases, the decisions on whether or not to extradite are made by Judges not Governors. It is improper for the Executive Branch to usurp the authority of the Judicial Branch. Unfortunately we’ve seen so much of this at the Federal level that now State Governors think that it’s OK to ignore laws and do what they want to do for political purposes. I like DeSantis, but this disappoints me. Maybe he just didn’t think it through. Maybe he’s just blowing political hot air.
Laws need to be followed, or properly changed. Without the ROL the result is that our system of government devolves into a collection of fiefdoms where the rules are ignored by warlords when they become inconvenient. A better approach would be to follow normal extradition procedures and let the courts decide the issue.

I don’t have time to look it up, but is it a policy or a law? What specific involvement does the Governor of Florida have? Is it required by law that he take whatever action is in question? If so, why do they need his action? If it’s just a policy then he can do as he wishes. Is he supposed to cause some sort of action by his state police (whatever they are called)? Doesn’t extradition happen after a person is arrested? In Texas I don’t recall the Governor having anything to do with it. Local law enforcement can make an arrest. They notify the county where the warrant was issued and law enforcement from that county or state has so many days to come get the person. What does DeSantis have to do with it other than trying to look good?
