Hi guys! I was surprised by a new Dagger for Christmas! My son grabbed a PSA daily deal which happened to be a SW3 with Docter Cut. This is my first venture into handgun optics and I’m really not familiar with the Docter cut…is it an oddity? Is it still mainstream? Seams like there are more options for RMR cuts? Finally what is a good, low cost red dot to slap on this bad boy? I have seen good reviews for Ceylee CALF X1, Vortex Venom, Radian, and Primary Arms. I do want one with shake to wake. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Doctor is a pretty well known pattern. PSA sells lots of Vortex optics which use doctor cut.
This is a pretty helpful link that lists a bunch of different optics for the cut. Obviously doesn’t cover every single one on the market, but it gives you some options and info. The Docter cut is less popular than RMR lately, but there’s still a lot to choose from out there.
Primary Arms makes good ones, though you may have to modify the cut slightly or the optic itself to fit on certain guns. Not sure if the Dagger has any drop in issues with it.
Having used them myself I would avoid the Vortex optics(Red dot optics at least, LPVO’s are decent). Their emitters are not as clean as other (cheaper and more durable) brands. They have a great warranty but if you want an optic without refresh rate issues and that doesn’t have scratches from brass casings, you’re gonna be sending it back constantly.
Looking into the “knockoff” optic brands like Cyelee more, it seems they MAY actually be better than the originals due to how the chinese companies will sell the designs to others, then implement changes that those people want. Rinse and repeat that process. So whichever company comes out with the latest knockoff actually has better features than the original. Unfortunate how it happens but for the consumer it’s a win. Of course I don’t have anything but Holosun now so I can’t confirm features and durability of Cyelee or other clones. Mileage may vary.
TLDR Go with the Cyelee optic. It’s cheap enough anyway that it’s a good intro into optics for you. And should be good enough to keep using if you do like optics.
PA optics have to be modified.
Even more reason to just go with the Cyelee then.
It’s also why I stick with RMR cut cause I don’t think I’ve ever seen an out of spec RMR optic. (That wasn’t just a QC fluke at least)
the dr cut is pretty awesome tbh, you can use the venom 3moa imo biggest bang for your buck on a pistol rmr
I’d second cyelee.
They may be considered budget but I’ve been remarkably surprised at how well they hold up.
The one ive had went through about 800 rounds of 9mm and another 340 rounds of 556 on top of this guy.
Ive changed the batteries once and its never shifted zero even after bashing it repeatedly bashing it on car doors.
I will also re-recommend Cyelee just because the Vortex glass is weak as crap. Brass casings scratch it up in normal use. My Venom after half a year of carry was awful while my equivalent Holosuns have years on them with no scratches. Even with steel ammo.
The Cyelee is likely a Swampfox clone so it will have comparable performance to those. And Swampfox optics seem to do pretty well. Actually a friend of mine just picked up a Cyelee for an RMR cut gun of his, though I haven’t checked in on how it’s doing.
Appreciate the insights here, I have a docter cut slide that needs a dot.
Anybody know the difference between the Cyelee X1 and V2?
Specs on the website seem the same.
X1 window is 27x17 while the V2 is 24x17. That’s all I noticed that was different.
now its basically free, i dont have any scratches on mine and i used it on multiple pistols
