Dehumidifier

Do you folks have a dehumidifier or another similar device in your safes? If so, what are you using and are you happy with it? What would you do differently?

I need something better. Not seeing any rust or evidence of moisture but the one I’m using needs constant drying out (plug it in to dry it out once every few weeks).

This is similar to what I’m using now

I don’t for a gun safe. I have an electric GE one for my RV and it’s great but way too much for a safe or even moderate cache room.

What about damprid or similar product? I use a couple big tubs for my RV in the off-season and that would probably work better. I’d imagine even a small little tub or cup would do the job maintenance free for many many months. I’m sure it would cost more in the long run than an electric powered device, but it’s a hell of a lot less work just change it out when the old one is done.

Hows that cordless work out? How big of an area is it for? Need something for a deep closet underneath a staircase.

I dont own icky guns so therefore I don’t need a safe.

it’s been fine. it’s supposed to last for around 6 weeks and cover a 100 sq foot area. I find that I need to plug it in about every 2-3 weeks. It works fine but I sometimes forget to check it. My ‘basement’ is a walk out and only the back corner of the house is below ground and even then it’s only about 2 feet so I don’t think it’s really that ‘moist’. Just wondering if those pellets need replacing.

the reason for asking is that I have a few more safes that I recently acquired and will be using for storing ammo and accessories. Before I buy more of these I wanted to see if there was something better out there.

This is the best item that I have found yet. All my safes have a access hole to run power into the safe. These Golden Rod dehumidifiers are maintenance free once you set it up. They come in different sizes so you can get the size you need for your application.

I watched a commercial for DamRid the other night and thought about that as well but the commercial seemed a little ‘late night infomercial-ish’ so wasn’t sure about it.

I like the idea of the heated rod to prevent moisture from forming to begin with instead of just capturing moisture. That price isn’t too bad to give it a try - can always return it through Amazon.

I think that you will be happy with it. I have had all of mine for a long time and I am totally satisfied. My brother and several of my friends use the same system. Personally I haven’t ever heard any complaints about the system.

My unit is divided in half, firearms on one side, ammo and optics on other and two upper shelves.

I had a 18" golden rod but have since gone to a 36" long golden rod that stretches from one side to the other just inside the door, plus one of the plug in rechargeable units up on the second shelf.

I have used a “rechargeable” dessicant canister, but my wife objected to using the stove to recharge it. The canister got rusty (over time).

I have used damp rid. I think the damp rid was easy, but non-rechargeable.

The golden rods are consistent and relatively set & forget.

I can’t say that I haven’t thought about setting up a warm light in the unit (like a welders cabinet). This would serve 2 purposes: light and to dry the air.

I have also toyed with adding in a small plug in dehumidifier.

There’s also those “Stop Rust Super Plugs” one could try. I have smaller ones in my toolboxes.

I ordered the 18 inch version and a temp/humidity monitor as well. If it work, I’ll get some for the safes.

Thanks folks!

Put the sensor in this afternoon. Still waiting on the golden rod
