Does anyone know of a good gold plater?

I have a Belgium Browning A5 Light Twelve gague and the trigger and a few other parts I need to have replated in gold to finish upgrading the shotgun. Does anyone know of a good reputable gold plater that I can send a few small parts off to be plated? Thanks in advance.

@1911
Good guys to work with

Ford’s was recommended to me when I asked about refinishing companies for nickeling. They offer gold.

i wonder how hard it would be to get into plating as a job. I ask as Saturn back in the 90s would have someone come out to their store here in columbia and gold plate the emblems on their cars, then throw some gold pin striping on the car, and called it the gold package, and charged like 1500 or something for it. i cant imagine it would have been that expensive or difficult to be able to do it while the emblems were on the car like they were, so idk… always wondered about that.

sadly i dont know of anyone in the columbia area that plates anything other than the DMV. lol

I actually did a little research on this and it really didn’t seem that difficult from what I remember.

thats kinda the feeling i had gotten from the folks at the dealership when they told me the guy wsa “here to plate the emblems” i also figured if it was simple like that and portable, and can be done when an emblem is on the car to begin with, it must not be very invasive, or complex.

The chemicals to do gold plating are pretty nasty if I remember correctly. I watched videos of recycling gold from computers even though that is different it is similar in many ways.

Definitely haz mat.

Well, if the ancient Mesopotamians could do it using makeshift batteries utilizing lemon juice and clay jars, I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to do today.

oh the recycling process is def nasty, but gold plating itself is basically gold leaf and electrolysis (I’m going off of memory here) basically you charge the item and it binds the gold to it like modern electrostatic paints and primers.

My grandfather was a plater for Raytheon, mainly plating things for missiles.

The chemicals are extremely hazardous…

I guess ive really only seen people use small amounts of electricity to suck the gold leaf to what they were trying to plate.

Also maybe we have differrents definitions of plating…i just watched a jewler plate some watch bands and cheap rings

For a quality electroplate you are dealing with a solution of Gold Cyanide, which will require hazardous material disposal.

Yeah, doesn’t sound like something i want in my morning eggs

@FitandFinish, Thanks for the laugh there. If the price of eggs keep going up it will get to be a luxury item like gold. For a lasting gold electroplating I will leave it to the professionals.

That is funny because I can remember that being a trend back in the day having gold emblems and interior badging put on autos and calling it the luxury package. I always thought it was kinda corny and a little too gaudy for my taste.

I like subtle things. Things that you have to look for or items that look factory but aren’t and make a change for the good but doesn’t stand out. I have always like to customize things and make them better. I like to have people notice that something is different but can’t quite put their finger on what exactly was changed or modified. If I can do that then I am happy. Anyone can throw parts at an item but that doesn’t always make it better or more attractive.

yeah, I sure wish I could have foreseen the change in our economy from the 80’s to today…lots of things I would have done different. My mom bought me a bitcoin gift card many many many years ago, I laughed at her, asked her for half the value of the card in cash, bitcoin was worth like 20 bucks then, I remembered this 5 or 6 years back ,brought it up to her and she responded that she couldn’t remember any of that. if she had just tucked those gift cards away instead of listening to me shed be rich af right now…
