Favorite Ranges

So what are your favorite ranges in Oklahoma? I tend to go to Wilshire Gun and sometimes H&H, but prefer the burgers at Wilshire. These two are indoor ranges, how about outdoor?

I tend to visit Wilshire. On occasion I hit Big Boys. Most outdoor ranges require membership to shoot at and I don’t want to join based on some of their requirements. I know Tri-City has a waiting list, high join price, and you can “volunteer” to save money.

I usually go to the Lexington wildlife preserve. They have 3 nice covered outdoor range’s with concrete stalls and adjustable benches. 2 rifle ranges that go out to 100 yards and a pistol range that goes to about 50 yards. It’s off of 180th just south of slaughterville, and it is a free outdoor range that does not require a membership.

Thanks for the info on Lexington. I don’t live far from there so will definitely check it out.

I usually use Big Boys now. I used to go to H & H but they have been a-holes to me the last few times and even when complaining to the manager they didn’t seem to care or even call me back as promised when I left my information. Wilshire is too rich for my blood. I am in agreement with @NewBuddhaman about not joining the local clubs due to some of the requirements. Particularly NRA membership. If someone wants to join that organization I have no problem with that but at least for me, I do not feel it represents me. My son took me to the El Reno outdoor range. It is an outdoor range that was cool just a bit of a drive for me.

Never been to Big Boys, what ranges do they have? One of the things I like about Wilshire is I can do anything from 25-101 yards, depending on what I’m shooting.

At least from what I’ve seen they only have maybe 25-30 yards lanes. It is air conditioned as it is inside which is vary nice and they have some sort of air exchange that sucks out bad fumes. Unless there is more lanes that I’m not aware of I would say they have about 12 lanes total and they are all the same length. I have only been to big boys a couple of times so I don’t know 100%. But just to give you an idea Big Boys cost is $15 for the first shooter and then 7.50 for each additional shooter. This is for as long as you want to shoot. H & H is $11.00 for the first shooter and $8.50 for each additional shooter and again it is for as long as you like. Then Wilshire charges $17.00 AN HOUR for their 25 and 30 yard lanes and $30.00 AN Hour for the 101 yard lanes. I have been in the store but never shot there. Especially with ammo pricing right now I need to save all I can for buying ammo. Wilshire is just out of the price range especially with the “per hour” pricing. I tend to spend time especially at the range with tinkering with my weapons as I am a gunsmith (looking for a job in the firearms field right now if someone is looking for some help). So a-lot of times I am also doing trial and error on various things that I have been working on.

Interesting on the unlimited time, I usually don’t bust the one hour limit at Wilshire even when I’m zeroing something. Wilshire has A/C and air filtration also, I believe the last is a requirement for indoor ranges. How much room does Big Bobs have to tinker? Wilshire and H&H don’t have much space other than the narrow lane they put you in. No tables behind the lanes. What all do you work on? Edit: Does Big Bobs have a brass only requirement for ammunition? Wilshire does and H&H says no magnetic bullets.

Honestly, I don’t know about a brass requirement. I pretty much shoot only brass except on a few of my comblock rifles and thus far I haven’t taken any of those there. They do let you pick up or catch your brass. I know H & H doesn’t do that, no idea about Wilshire though. I don’t reload as of yet. I know how to as I was taught in school but when I was adding up the cost it was only going to save me one to two cents per round and then the investment in the equipment so far just hasn’t made enough sense for me to pull the trigger on it. Not to mention the time I don’t seem to have. So far I have worked on mainly semi-auto rifles and pistols. I have built several ARs. I’ve done 80 % builds on ARs, polymer 80’s and 1911’s. I have built a 50 cal black powder rifle for school. I have done quite a few custom schemes with Hydrodipping. Right now I am currently working on making a jig so I can start jeweling bolts and receivers etc.

This is the 1911 80% build I did.

This is a .224 valk rifle I made

Couple of examples of my work.

Mainly was curious if Big Boys allowed steel cases and bimetal projectiles as those are easier to get in 7.62x39 than brass. Everything else I shoot it’s not really an issue. I don’t reload and really don’t plan on getting into it any time soon. Thanks for the info. Edit: Nice builds.

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I want to spread this info.
There are actually about 11 outdoor ranges around Oklahoma owned/managed by the wildlife department. I’ve only been to the one in Okmulgee and it’s very nice and well maintained. Shotgun/skeet range, covered pistol range, and covered rifle range out to 200yards with rubber mat targets that you just staple your preferred paper targets to. It’s free to anyone who has a OK hunting license, which is only $25. Open sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year. Seems like a great deal to me. And no restrictions on ammo type or rate of fire! I’ve been several times and it’s never even close to crowded, even on weekends. Here’s the website for all the locations. Hope this helps someone out there!

Lex has been my only shooting place for a spell now. With todays economy I can’t afford Tri City and defiantly don’t have the green for Wilshire.

But after I win the Powerball (any day now) I am going to have a bad mamma jamma range built…and yes I would share

My primary range is the OKC Gun Club! During the winter and in climate weather I go to Wilshire.

If you’re in the Northeast Oklahoma region, Fort Crowder in Neosho, MO is a state maintained range. 25-50-100 yard ranges, covered benches, Shotgun range, open Dawn-Dusk Tue-Sun.

Be Aware: Unmanned public range, no SO/RO. One shooting incident in the ~40-50 years it’s been open.

Stupid People ARE out there.

Resurrection time:

I have not been to an actual range in years. The beautiful thing about where I live is old dirt roads that dead end into birms are all over the area. So I kind of make my own. Personally, I hate indoor ranges.
