Good Morning…
So the internet is a buzz with talk about the Brand new Federal 6.5CM +PEAK ammo being brought out.
It runs at 80K, and uses a steel alloy case that “allows” it to be loaded to 80K.
So far , everything I have read says “maybe”… “Federal advises AR-10 users to consult the individual rifle manufacturer for recommendations on compatibility with higher-pressure ammunition.”
I understand the higher 80K would certainly need a Adj. GB, and probably need to adjust the “buffer” setup. ( weight recoil spring strength, and buffer weight )
I also understand that this round would likely accelerate barrel wear. And possibly be “harsh” on the bolt lugs.
However , I wouldn’t be considering an “all out switch” from conventional 6.5CM.
More of a I wouldn’t mind trying some , if it is safe.
The thought of 300FPS more, is alluring, in a “I wonder” way.
I would love to hear PSA’s advice, as well as the Forums thoughts.
Quite honestly, I am beginning to see the US Military leaning heavily into 80K PSI ammo.
And it isn’t just in the 6.8 SIG… There are numerous articles concerning 80K rounds being tested.
5.56, 308 Hybrid, .338LM… and now the 6.5CM +PEAK.
There are concurrent tests being done with different barrel coatings and types, and twists (think ultra gain twist, PROOF and Seekins and Geissele ) that are / have been tested.
Any how… it is a daily new developments thing. Kinda hard to keep up with. Lol
Any thought would be appreciated.
Oops… and FWIW.. the 6.5CM was chosen because it is such a new cartridge, with modern barrel steel… IE , there aren’t some 50+yo rifles laying around. Like a older 30/06 or such.
