Knocking on the AR15 door

New to the AR platform and was hoping to get some help. None of the complete rifles I want to purchase will ship to my state, so I’m tasked with a build.

I have a neighbor who has built a few and is willing to help, but he asked me to do some research and learn what parts I would need on my own. Would I have everything I need to build an AR if I buy a stripped lower, bolt carrier group, and this KIT.

Outside of tools, I would appreciate any feedback on what else I would need or don’t need. Thank you :folded_hands:

Look for one with a better grip and stock, those are the first things that get upgraded and you end up paying twice for them and nobody wants the waffle stock or A2 grip.

That kit also comes with a BCG, so no need to buy a second.

Before you purchase…ask yourself “what is this for?”

Plinking? A 16" will be fin.
Varmit hunting? Same.
Home defense and plinking? I would go shorter a build a pistol.

What optic do you want? A little magnification like a 1-4 or 1-6 is a huge help. With shorter i might would go red dot or a 1-4.

Any chance you’d be willing to link me to a grip which you would consider superior?

I’m literally a blank canvas right now. It would start out as a range toy just to get familiar and more comfortable handling the AR15. I planned on learning with iron sights.

I don’t think I have a choice but to go 16" living in CA.

He’s in Kalifornia, he has two options.

Build a featureless rifle and use detachable magazines. Or build a rifle with all the common features, and be saddled with a fixed magazine.

OP needs to do some research before he buys anything.

This is not legal advice, I’m not an attorney. :joy:

I got to try out a few before deciding on owning my own which led me to this build path. The thought of a fixed mag just didn’t sit well with me from the start so I have decided to go with a featureless build with a fin on the grip.

Thank you for all the links. It seems I may need to move away from the kits and order by piece to get the 15" inch rail.

Thanks for all the replies. Some great info which got me to go back to the drawing board. I failed to mention that I do live in California and plan to build a featureless rifle. I don’t have a purpose for it outside of it being a range toy to get more familiar with the AR15 platform. I cannot find a fin-grip that I like on PSA so I would have to source that elsewhere. Once again, I would appreciate any feedback on the items I have in my shopping cart. Outside of tools, do I have everything I would need to build a complete AR15? Still open to any suggestions. Thanks!

Is the short buffer gonna be a problem?

Is the mag catch on a PA10 the same as an AR15? I have a couple LR308s, one takes a std AR15 mag catch, the other is proprietary to the lower. I wasn’t sure what PSA lowers use.

Hang on

I’m giving out crap advice this morning :expressionless_face:

If you are going to individually buy part by part then places like Primary Arms, Brownells, MidwayUSA, etc. Are where you will find california compliant stuff.

No. PSA’s is proprietary.

Selling of Kits is illegal in California. Constructive possession of a complete lower. The poster has to buy a California compliant grip, a fire control group, and the parts to make the magazine non-removable. Illegal aliens and shoplifters are protected species in California.

Didn’t think about constructive possession. If the AFT is using it I imagine CA is too.
