Hello Friends,
Right now I am looking into building an AR-RPK hybrid and the KS47 is a perfect candidate. If I purchase a gen 2 KS-47 16", will I be able to replace the barrel and gas system to fit this 18 inch heavy barrel in 7.62x39?

Thank you!

@osaintvincent Welcome! Let me look into it and get back with you.
Be aware, the ks47 upper does not have M4 feedramps. It has this big scoop like something off a pistol.

The barrel I linked has M4 feed ramps. I’m not very familiar with the AR platform as I mostly use a PTR91. Will that cause issues with feeding, or prevent it from feeding entirely?
@osaintvincent I will have your answer tomorrow from the engineer behind the KS47. My understanding is that the KS47 has a “trough” or could be call a “scoop” like described above. This helps with feeding. I will get back with you tomorrow about the M4 feed ramps as well.
It’s my impression that the PSA feedramps are the reason that only PSA is able to feed 762x39 reliably in the AR platform.
Thank you for the help. If the “trough” is necessary for reliability, would it be possible for a gunsmith to modify a barrel with M4 feed ramps into that? I apologize for the list of questions, I just really want to build this rifle.
I talked with engineering. The barrel you are looking at will fit. We designed the “trough” vs M4 feed ramps to make it more reliable. Your barrel will fit, but it may not be as reliable as it is now.
Are there any plans to produce more of the KS-47 16" barrels, or moreso the barrel extension?
The purchase of either would allow me to complete my build.
Thanks
Guy

Welcome @GuyActual I just sent you a PM.
Everyone is waiting for barrels not just this guy

@3gunrich I am being told that we will have barrels in stock within the next two weeks!
I didn’t realize the barrel was proprietary. I now worry I’m going to have a PSA horror story where I have the whole gun built and waiting years for a barrel.
Maybe it should say that on the essential build kit page, or even better have a drop down menu where you select what barrel you want to purchase with your kit. Since it is essential.
Been checking each day since I landed here and found out.
@Wrathstar The barrel is not proprietary. It is the barrel extension. I just found that out today! I am working on getting that listed as a part individually as well as included with the lower/upper/BCG combo so folks don’t run into any problems.

@Wrathstar and All,
The barrel extension is installed and effects the gas system as well as headspace. I talked with our barrel engineer at DC Machine about it. He said that you cannot just add it to another barrel. It is part of the process of making the barrel and making it work properly.
The KS47 is a proprietary design as are the other 6 variants of the AR/AK mutant. We will be offering our barrels for sale so that the “trough” feed ram will let you shoot any type of ammo vs. traditional M4 feed ramps.
Here is the statement from our AK engineer:
"After the barrel and extension are QPQ nitrided, the assembly operator torques the barrel extension to 150psi.
Headspace is then verified.
The barrel indexing pin is then pressed into the barrel extension.
That indexing pin is used to position the barrels location in the gas port drilling
machine.
The gas port ID is then drilled in the barrel in reference to the indexing pin.
In summary - the barrel extension must be properly torqued to a barrel, headspace confirmed, indexing pin pressed into extension then the gas port in the barrel is drilled in relation to the barrel indexing pin. To re-order that process permits a higher degree of scraping a barrel and or extension."

I understand, I wanted to build an AR-RPK hybrid out of this but I suppose I will have to wait. By chance, will PSA come out with an RPK, 74 pistol, or a heavy barrel for the KS47? Been trying to snag an AKP for a while but they sell quick.

In the long-term future we will be coming out with an SVD, and the 74 pistol is something we are working on as well. We do not have any plans for a HBAR KS47.

Excellent, I am very excited to purchase a few of those upcoming products! I know this is an odd request, but would it be possible to get in direct contact with one of PSA’s engineers in research and development?

@osaintvincent I can send suggestions along to them if you would like to PM me. I cannot get them in direct contact with you.
Everyone here seems to be asking for heavier barrels; I want a lighter one for my 10.5 pistol. Since you don’t seem to have any listed, I’m looking at fitting a Primary Arms Diamondback 7.62x39C10M50B9.5 which looks to shave over half a pound from the front end. One of the concerns that I have about Dremeling down the 6 o’clock locking lug on the barrel extension is the peening that I see on the PSA barrel in this area and the adjoining lugs on either side…
I am also an engineer; Chemical and Materials From GA Tech…
