So it’s the bolt carrier that’s specific to the KS47, but any AR 7.62x39 bolt should work? That would seem ideal because if I remember correctly AR15 7.62 bolts tend to break lugs off rather frequently compared to the beefier 5.56 bolts that have more material on them.?.?
Apparently I won an 80% lower and jig from 80% Arms for making a donation to GOA, but we’ll see. Maybe a Grendel build? IDK if I want a billet lower pistol. I built a .224 Valkyrie a few years back, and kind of wish I had build a 6.5 Grendel instead, but IDK if I feel like investing in another round that I really don’t need. 9x39 seems cool, but is it taking off in the AR platform? I quit keeping up with this stuff when the China-virus jacked up the gun market, and tried to wait it out to start thinking about new firearm purchases. IDK, from what I remember reading was that the 9x39 was supposed to be like .300 BLK, (a good round to suppress, even though I don’t current shoot suppressed) but better.?.? To me a .300 BLK always made more sense in a SBR or pistol.
I think the KS47 bolt has a couple of lugs machined down to work properly with the AK mags, but it’s been long enough ago since I read it that I can’t recall for sure.
From Josiah on ARFCOM:
“The KS47 bolt AND carrier are both optomized for the KS47 and AR47.”
I have all my AR’s lock up other than my KS47, so I don’t have anything easy to get to without going in my safe to compare it to, but going off memory the KS47 BCG does look noticably different than the common AR15 BCG. Both the flats on the back of the BC, and also under it like is shown in the other pictures the other guy posted comparing the 7.62 BCG’s. The bolt itself seems to have two lugs with a radius that pretty much sweeps the whole width of the them. I don’t remember that on any other AR bolt.?.?
I think I bought this gun in May of 2019. It’s a GEN2, but not sure what, if any changes have come out since.
After research what the one fellow I was talking to in here was saying, apparently the KS47 had some extractor issues that have been worked on to fix them, but IDK.
This shows the lugs that need to be chamfered on a 7.62x39 bolt. This mod can be easily done to any stock x39 bolt and allows the bolt to clear the feed lips of an AK mag
So I finally got to shoot and somewhat zero my KS47. Yep definitely worth the money and yeah it does have a learning curve with mags and ammo, but nothing to difficult. Now to try to locate more hunting ammo for general season.
An A1 stock, much smoother shooting. Plus I like the check weld much better and the fact that it doesn’t pull my facial hair out. Also don’t have to worry about it being at the right length/to short when I pick it up.
Magpul K2+ grip
Troy vertical foregrip a little heavy looks cool and easy to use.
A.R.M.S plastic sites. What I had and they work.
Shark Arms Warcomp copy $42.99 it has worked well for me. Flatter shooting and very little flash.
I originally had an Acog Ecos it worked great. I found a good deal on an used Elcan 1/4 and wanted to train with it to see how much I liked it. So I put it on the KS47 since I have been shooting it the most. Overall I love it. 1X is amazing. Despite the eye relief I like the 1X better than a red dot. Clearer and brighter easier to see through shadows etc. Elcan’s 4X for me is not as nice as an Acog. Eye box is much tighter and reticle is not as fine. Overall an excellent optic.
I have just over a thousand rounds through it. The first few hundred rounds total crap. I tried sending it back to PSA. They kept it for 4 months then fired 10 rounds through it and sent it back telling me that it worked fine. I ended up replacing the extractor with one from RRA and it has been almost 100%. I had a round that didn’t quite clear. The case actually cut the front of the ejection port.
Overall I really like this KS47 and how it’s set up. I might at some point put the Acog back on it. The only other thing that I might do is chop the barrel a little since the muzzle device is so long. The accuracy has been excellent. Five round groups have been right at 2”, 10 round groups open up to 2 1/4” at 100 yards . I actually had a 2” three round group at 200 yards when I was trueing my zero. At 300 yards using the bottom of the 400 meter line on the bdc hitting an eight inch gong is fairly easy. I went ahead and bought another 16” ks47 barrel from PSA because in my opinion that’s one thing that they got right. I like the profile and hopefully the accuracy will be just as good as the first one.
ETA. With a loaded 30rd Unity magazine it weighs 11lb 9oz. A little chunky. The A1 stock and the Elcan both add weight.
From left to right:
18" mid length upper, Green Mountain barrel from Kak Inds, PSA Custom adj gas block, Gibbz Arms G-47 side charging upper receiver, an AK cut Mil Spec BCG.
16" carbine length BCA heavy barrel and handguard, Gibbz Arms G-47 side charging upper.
10.5" PSA upper with a DDC Hard Charger(modified) side charging adapter. PSA KS-47 BCG
The PSA KS-47 Essential Parts Build Kit is a great option. It gives you everything you need to start. It gives you the core necessities and allows you to pick your favorite items to finish out your build. The only reason I chose a Gibbz Arms upper over the Essential Parts Build Kit was I just needed an upper build and I prefer a side charging option on the KS-47(since you have to charge every mag) without needing to acquire an additional side charging adapter. I will warn you, when you do put one together it will quickly become your favorite and you may wind up neglecting your other firearms
So I built my personal ideal KS47 upper. 13.7in pin and weld with Cobalt Kinetics muzzle device for 16in. Gibbz side charger upper. Riflespeed gas block. CMT 12.5in handrail. VLTOR A5H3. Reptilia grip+Talon Pro wrap. Hiperfire Reflex trigger. DD irons. Midwest Industries mini-acog QD mount w/ PA 3x. Can still use the irons with PA see-through cantilever mounts. It took some “tactical bubbaing” fitting the handguards anti-rotation tabs in, had to drill/dremel into the upper to accommodate them, it doesn’t look to bad, I was careful. As well as the Riflespeed control, I had to shorten it as it wouldn’t fit my barrel length/handguard config. First AR I’ve assembled according to my every whim and it was fun going thru the process and troubleshooting fitment and whatnot. Going to shoot it tomorrow, I am very pleased with it so far, planning to suppress it with a Nomad-30.
Tell us how the PA 3x Raptor and mount preforms. I’m this close to talking myself into one. Great looking setup .
P.S.
Ran into the same issue with the anti-rotation tabs on my handguard and Gibbz upper. I know the PSA KS-47 upper is 1mm wider than Mil Spec, but forgot that the Gibbz was too on my second Gibbz upper build. I just ground them off.
So far the PA 3x is awesome. The eye relief is better than expected, I have it in a high mount, so it really provides a comfortable natural head position behind the optic.
I thought about grinding the handguard tabs off but my -tism wanted to maintain the full functionality of everything and not lose the anti-rotation so not only did I drill/dremel relief into the upper receiver. I went back and Bondoed the cuts I made then Vaselined the anti-rotation tabs and mated the handguard to the receiver aligned correct as the bondo was curing to fill in the excesss i took away and get a perfect snug fit. I know, i have problems.
The Riflespeed gas block has sleeves that fit over your barrel and allow you to adjust the gas. I had to cut the the sleeve on my gas block about a quarter inch back as the sleeve was too long and covering the threads of the barrel. You’ll see what I mean if you go to Riflespeed’s config tool. Thankfully I have access to a lathe and portaband and neccesary tools at my job to do all this nitpicky stuff.
Heyo. Tweaked the gun a little. From the 2gun match this weekend. Had varied shots from 20-100yds, standing\prone. The pa3xmicro worked great, eye box is not that bad, with a little practice, would not be an issue IMO. A guy let me use the Sandman-s, the riflespeed worked great, cranked it back 2 clicks, could have went 2 more but gun ran fine.
