Mag will seat with bolt closed...on PSA AR-15

Ok Ya’ll ,

I got another crazy Q… LOL

Got my awesome PSA M4 Carbine and I love it… However, while at the range on Sunday, I noticed that when I inserted a 30 rd mag in it with the bolt closed it will not seat… I know, just slam it… I did… No GO… Does just fine with the bolt open for “Ready” position. I just read that I can loosen the bolt catch and that will help it… Just checking to see if that is the case…

Thanks,
Jack

There isnt really a way to “loosen” the bolt catch other than just using it. Slap it harder

sometimes the mags are too tight, to the rifles, take one round out, and the mag will seat perfectly i bet. i have to do this on some of my rifles that are just too tight

Have to do that on my AR-9 with the 33 round mags. The others work fine, guess just too much pressure from a fully compressed spring.

thats my theory as well… i’ve had some that way on the 33 rounders too… actually had it with a bunch of mags, just depends… on the gun and the ammo and the mag for me.

@davidheflin66 Out of curiosity, does the mag seat “easily” when there are 29 or 28 rounds?

nvpurk is CORRECT!
It’s normal. You can’t seat a fully loaded magazine in an AR. When it’s fully loaded, remove one round and your set. I’ve seen this happen to many AR shooters.

I can confirm this also. Mine will set with a good slap, it’s tight tho. Taking a round or two out works just fine

Hey ya’ll, I figured it out… LOL Not let me preface this with saying that, I grew up shooting M1’s and Carbines along with all other weapons…except an AR . They were not available like they are now. That being said… I’m old school… LOL Ok, my buddy came over last night and brought his 30 rd mags. They worked perfect. I’m thinking, “Wait a minute” So, I dumped my mag and guess what? I had loaded it with 31 rds. LOL OMG!!! I’m new to the mags as well… I just thought when you couldn’t put another in, it had 30 … So, problem solved… I reloaded all my mags with 30 NOT 31 LOL

Thanks guys,
Jack

Awesome - it may sound like a simple solution, but the world is filled with simple solutions that no one finds  Not sure I would have found that! I’m like you: Fill 'em up until they’re full.

It’s possible that it could help brother. Honestly I’ve had that happen before with my old Colt. So for what it’s worth at least it’s not just a Palmetto State upper issue exclusively. I’ve also noticed that I have issues more often like that when I’m using polymer magazines. It’s not always the case, but it seems to happen more often with polymer than with my aluminum or steel mags.

I’m going to get some metal mags as well… Don’t know if you saw my latest comment… It wasn’;t the mag. lol I put 31 rounds in a 30 rd. mag. LMAO!!! Dumb me… Been shooting all arms since a child. But, this is my first AR… Learning curve… Hell, I always just loaded mags till they couldn’t hold anymore… Full. LOL no so with these… lol

Thanks,
D

28 or 29rds is the better number

welcome to the forums @parker0630 glad to have you!
as for the mags, i was told somewhere by someone that some folks are trainfed to not fill the mags totally up, so that if someone is counting rounds against you, they never know how many you have before you have to reload. to me it made some sense at the time… especailly if you’re firing and part of a group… if everyone has different numbers loaded in their mags, it keeps a better chance of you all not being out all at the same time as well. so it may have more than one benifit.

Glad you got it worked out. Mine takes a good slap to seat, with the bolt forward, as well. I’ve had several AR platform weapons act the same way, especially my AR10. Enjoy!!

I was about to say, I have never had a problem seating a mag with the bolt closed. You just have to smack it, especially gotta put some ass behind it if its a new magazine. But if you managed to stuff 31 rounds in there it would make perfect sense as there would absolutely be no give at that point.

I don’t have this problem so far, but I avoid the issue by only loading thirty-nine rounds in the mag anyway.
