Howdy y’all, just got out to the range with my new KS-47 10.5 pistol and wondered if anyone else experienced this.
Using steel yugo 30rd mags, camber, fire, mag drops on its own. Hold the bolt open, make sure mag is inserted correctly and locked. Falls free after the first shot. I even had my buddy who is a AK guy try it to make sure it’s not me.
Magpul 10rd, same issue.
Magpul 30rd, Works! don’t ask me why, ran 120rds no issue.
Before I leave try the yugo again, and now it stayed in. Ran 30rds no issue.
Mystery.
I did build it from a stripped lower/ upper. Didn’t deviate from stock except for adjustable gas and echo sport. Gas was full open so no difference from fixed, and wasn’t running in echo at this point just trying to sight in. (going to make a thread about the echo)
Have your buddy shoot it with the mag that falls out……and video it with your smart phone. Use the “slow-mo” mode and close up on the mag area. You will be surprised how well you can see what is going on by watching the video. You should be able to identify why the mag is falling out.
BTW….When it comes to AK mags……there is no manufacturer or military specification for its size. Each manufacturers mag is slightly different from the others……but most of them are close enough that they work well in most AKs…(and KS-47).
Yugo and all the former Yugo countries AKs and their mags….have been significantly different from the rest of the Eastern Bloc AK manufacturers and parts are not interchangeable. If I am not mistaken they even have 5.45 mags that will fit into a KS-47……that is just an example of how different the specs of their mags are.
Whatever you learn about the mag falling out….please share the information with us….so we can all learn . You won’t be the last person to experience this.
Good luck, post video if you can on KS-47 video thread.
Possible cause found. The magazine release does not rest against the trigger guard, when using the mags that fell out.
With the mags that ran fine, the magazine release was fully against the trigger guard.
Now I’ll have to range test with the mags that were not working by pushing that magazine release to the trigger guard. That does make it tough to release, maybe it will lossen up like break in.
While the mag release paddle not coming all the way back could be an issue, I have many mags that work but don’t allow the paddle to return fully to the trigger guard. I posted a video discussing it on this thread.
It’s titled “Pondering the Mag Release on my KS-47”. I’m not saying it’s not the problem, just that it’s not always a problem. I know there is a recent video on YouTube of a new KS-47 owner having a similar problem. I didn’t watch all the video, but it he appears to have rectified the problem in follow up videos. Hope you figure it out.
@Wrathstar …… I caution you; if the magazine release lever is not closing completely on its own….or with slight pressure……resist the temptation to pull the mag release lever back against the trigger guard with any pressure beyond “slight”. Pulling that lever back may “Lock” that magazine in the mag well making an easy fitting problem into a complicated disassembly in order to remove the mag. You will not be the first person to experience this.
Browse the threads and look for threads related to magazine fitment in AKs or KS-47. The mechanics are the same. There is good information there that is precisely related to your malady. With a small sharp file, you can get those mags to fit perfectly. It’s very easy only taking a few minutes. Once you do your first mag……and the light bulb comes on ……you will be in magazine heaven !
It is definitely a mag fit issue. Some of my steel yugo surplus mags work great, others not at all.
I looked at the tab on the rear of the mag comparing the two groups. The ones that work are thinner, more worn.
They all work in a real AK without a thought. But for the KS, a file on that tab will fix things.
So thanks everyone, I now know it is a common mag fitment issue, my case was just enough that the mag fell out every shot.
Update, KS-47 running fine with all magazines after fitting the mags by filling the underside of the rear tab.
However I have joined the broken extractor club! But my bolt is older I’m pretty sure it didn’t have the new harder extractor.
I’m sure PSA will take care of it, so not worried.
I love my KS-47 so much….that I have an extra “complete bolt” and an additional extra extractor….in my pistol grip……in case that day comes when my extractor breaks.
Get you an extra extractor in case it happens again.
