After an extremely long Hiatus from the gun range. The new ks47 I purchased from pasa begged to go for the 100-yard range.
Being relatively new to 762 rifles I went to the range with 5 different boxes of ammo. And then was told I couldn’t use two of them. Due to a steel core.
Scope all sighted in and ready with a laser. Finally time to fire the first round. Round 1, 2 and 3 perfect. After that I could not fire more than two rounds at a time. This is due to stovepiping failure to eject and just downright failure to engage and have the bolt slide all the way forward. I stopped right there took the gun apart cleaned it put it all back together. Same conditions. Tried 3 different magazines. Same conditions. Tried all the ammo that I had with me oh, that I was able to shoot. Same conditions.
Additionally occasionally after firing the weapon the mag would come out. It would drop free.
yea like guitarguy says it seems like the mag wasnt seating completly or something there wasnt right… as for the stovepiping and failure to cycle etc, did you run the gun wet or dry?
I had a couple mag fitment issues that were helped with the following post. My mags felt like they were secure, but a good shaking of the mag with my hand made it come out. It may not be your issue, and be sure to read all the notes on the pictures before any work (unlike me):
If you get a chance to read the whole thread, you’ll learn a lot.
If the magazine is falling out of the gun while firing……the magazine release is NOT closed completely. During recoil….the KS-47 is moving backwards into your shoulder & the magazine is rotating out of the mag well……essentially “rocking” out……the opposite of rocking & locking it in.
It’s very easy to just slightly modify each mag to fit perfectly into your KS-47. It only takes a couple of minutes for each mag……but once have your first mag done….and you understand the “fitting process” …it becomes easy and quick.
Review the threads in the KS-47 section….there are few threads that cover magazine fitment.
The KS-47 is notoriously a bear to run….new. That 308 recoil spring and the heavy buffer are a bear….and any “underpowered” ammunition….along with absorbing the recoil will contribute to weak ejection.
The first three hundred rounds should “break it in”. Keep that buffer spring well lubricated and hold the KS-47 firmly…trying not to allow the rifle to travel rearward under recoil.
The KS-47 is a great 7.62x39 platform……you just have to stick with it…get past the break in period and figure out the magazine fitting issue…
Its worth it….the action will become buttery smooth and you’ll be exchanging mags like a seasoned “AK Operator”
Good luck……& post some pictures.
+1 everything @iznthesky said. Especially how buttery smooth a hand-fit magazine is. I had to do that to my 5.45 pmags (for a different rifle) and it’s so slick now. So far, my own KS has been fine with pmags out of the box, but it takes a tiny jiggle to let the release lever “click” in. If it ever drops one, I’ll touch the lugs with sandpaper but so far i think its just breaking it in still.
I recently bought a new KS47 lower. I already have a 16in KS47 that I bought 2 years ago with 10+ magazines that all fit perfectly. This new lower would not fully accept any of my magazines, it would not fully close the latch and had to be pushed very hard into place and was then very hard to disengage. It looks like the mag catch is a little too long on some newer lowers.
Lowes sells a very small 6 file set with flat file, needle file, round, etc…Used those to file the end of the magazine tab down a little, it took a little while, trial and error with multiple magazines until it was fine.
I had the same experience with my new KS47 and the single included pmag I bought last year. The mag kept releasing and piping rounds. I actually sent it back for warranty being new to the 7.62 world. They replaced the ejector and took a file to the pmag I included in the box going back. Just a little disapointed in PSA this didn’t function as supposed to when initially picked up from the ffl AND the answer I got from PSA “file down your magazines to fit the rifle.” Although, It’s shot awesome since getting it back!
This past week, went to use a new out of package 10 round pmag and was seeing the same behavior where the mag release wouldn’t close completely and would come loose with a little front to back. Exactly what @iznthesky and @robnaugle described, shaved down the bottom of the mag tab and had that sucker perfect in about 15 minutes (going very slow and checking fitment frequently) . Hopefully when i get back to the range with the new mag, it will function properly. I want to thank everybody for their input/suggestions here; feel a lot better I’m not alone wth this particular issue.
Thanks for the warm welcome @GamecockOperator ! Yeah, does kind of suck but isn’t that bad. I’ve been a long time PSA customer and is really the first issue seen like this. They were easy to work with and stood behind their warranty which says a lot.
I’m just glad I found this post here. I’ve seen some stuff about KS mag stop fixes and whatnot, but nothing on this specific behavior. Looking forward to being a member here.
yeah i agree its not too bad. goodness knows i’ve had to file my share of mags before. lol. Im glad the warranty program wasnt too complex and that they stand behind their products. they’ve always been real good about that… sometimes too good, even helping when they shouldnt.
we’re glad you found the post too! always nice to have another like minded member!
I know others here have mentioned that AK magazines apparently don’t have a formal specifications sheet. That’s probably the reason we all have to do a final “tuning” to get that mag fitting properly - I wouldn’t be surprised if AK owners had to do the same thing. Also note that the KS-47 receiver is aluminum, so steel mags might be rough on it (thus PSA or Magpul magazines are recommended) - this is info learned reading various threads too.
Here are some other links that have some great instructions on what to and what not to file. Thisguy’s Guns: Image (wordpress.com) ← a great picture
Another thread here on this forum with awesome info:
Thank you for all the great info here @nvpurk ! Magpul is all I run with my ARs and is first choice anyway; after hearing this though, definitely won’t be running any steel mags with my KS.
All I needed to file was the underside of the tab (#2 in linked picture) to get it seated correctly.
