A quick search on this topic didn’t turn up anything yet in the AR-15 category, so I felt it was appropriate to start this conversation:
What are you looking for in a muzzle device?
What is the weapon being primarily used for?
What is a reasonable amount to spend on a quality muzzle device?
What are some suppressor hosts that still work well by themselves?
The direction I’m asking from, is that I’m working towards putting together a lightweight 14.5/7" recce pistol in 5.56, and eventually I’ll pin and weld to make it a rifle.

I love the VG6 muzzle brakes.
I particularly like the VG6 epsilon.

Surefire Warcomp has become my flash hider choice.
IMHO, flash hiding qualities are more important then recoil reduction in a “SHTF” firearm. Those also work with Surefire suppressors… and the Surefire Warden Blast Shield. NOTE the Warden is no longer shown on Surefires webpage ? Discontinued ?
For my fun guns, BCM Gunfighter, VG6, and Lantacs all have reduced perceived recoil.
And then dependent upon the barrel length and intended use… all the above mentioned allow use of a QD blast shield.
The Lantac’s require a Lantac BMD and collar
The BCM and VG6 Gamma “can” use a Griffin Armament Blast Shield… the cuts on the back of the must be to spec. ( not rounded in the valleys )
As for cheap… the A2 Flashider really is a great inexpensive design… and hard to beat for the “bang for your buck” aspect.
Sadly, there are a lot of compromises when it comes to a “do all” muzzle device.
So whomever really should consider TooEhh’s original questions.
Maybe adding a more specific one … what shooting environment are you going to be using it in ?
And where would a compromise be “ok” to do.
Closed room ? from a car ? people directly along side of you ? Daytime / Nighttime ? Purely for a fun gun ? Is dirt being blasted up into a concern ? ( and it is )
And that is also what makes the A2 such a good “Jack of all trades”… IMHO
That compromise subject, is one of the reasons I prefer to be able to use a QD blast shield with mine, I can limit the side blast and direct the blast forward if need be… but, even then the forward directing devices tend to amplify the flash signature… so another compromise. If the forward directing muzzle devices didn’t amplify muzzle flash so much… I would be more intrigued.

I realize this is an old thread, but having just tried a number of various flash hiders and compensators, I will tell you the lowly A2 reigns supreme. The proof is in numerous YouTube videos taken in slow motion, in the dark. The A2 birdcage may not be sexy, but it’s the most effective flash hider I’ve seen to-date, and as two nice bonuses: (1) they are inexpensive, and (2) they don’t snag on clothing or brush with any jagged edges (unlike all those custom flash hiders that look like a dragon’s… nose?

From the research I’ve done the Precision armament efab and maybe the afab but not as much seem like cheat codes. The low light flash suppression while still doing typical muzzle control things is impressive and I’m currently looking for a way to combine them with a blast can preferably with end caps.
