Steve if you ran a constant power jumper wire to the clutch switch, does that mean that you can now crank the car in gear without pressing the clutch or clutch switch in? Or does that mean that since you now have power to the clutch switch it works as it should as a safety device?
I am so happy for you because hearing that motor is a big milestone achieved. Congratulationsā¦
we only jumped the wire that was what would have powered the VATS processor. by doing so it passed power through the place where the relay for the VATS was, allowing power to come thru from what would have been the VATS processor. This thus let power flow from the now missing VATS processor (like it was there and the key checked out) to the next check position, which is the Clutch Safety switch. it does not change the clutch safety switch at all, so as long as the clutch is depressed, the car will start. allowing power through the switch normally. If the clutch is not depressed, that circuit is broken, and thus will not start. does that clear it up for you now?
so yes, the clutch safety switch is functioning exactly as it should now.
now yall probably know i hate how i look in photos and videos⦠but i cant suppress my joy at this car starting. Now i just have to get my 68 starting. its a different situation, so i havent started a thread about that yet.. but weāll see how that goes after wednesday when my friend is coming to help me with it⦠but i digress.. Please forgive how filthy the car is.
Boo-YAH!
Dusty is to be expected, itās been sitting.

Thatās a healthy sounding motor.
thanks. when i built that motor back 10 years or so ago, i built it with some premium parts.. and yeah, heās real healthy.
its a lot of fun to drive once you stop mostly spinning somewhere in 3-4th gears.
its a beast when it runs. Iāve been in itā¦
Congrats!
This is why for my indefinite-hold KARR (KITTās evil twin; ironic when the ābadā one is street legal but the āgoodā one isnāt) build I had wanted an '82 to '84 - less factory electronics to strip out is closer to a āblank canvasā for forty years of ācatch-up teching.ā
Glad to hear you got it going. I totally forgot about that chip thing in the key of those third gens.
Blue is now running also..
thanks man.. i think we got it fixed for good now.. i dont see it ever having an issue starting again. ![]()
thanks, and i get it about the electronics. that stupid VATS setup no one ever liked, but it was GMās attempt at security to keep cars from being so easy to steal.. now i understand the system so well, its really simple to bypass. i had thought it was intertwined with the factory computer in the car but apparently it is not at all. which makes it even easier to remove.
Thanks. yeah.. in the back of my mind i had thought about it and said to myself āself, you bypassed that years ago, it cant be the issue anymoreā boy was i wrong.
Yessir, that is true too. hereās proof..
sadly both cars are in dire need of a full detail.
He says as you can clearly see the clouds in the sky on reflection from the paintā¦
photos and video can hide the dirt and imperfections quite well.. in person its filthy, and is disgraceful.
