PSA background

If the law in SC says you don’t need a background check on a CWP holder, and I show my CWP at the store, why, every time I buy a gun at PSA do they always disappear with my credentials and say “you can shop around and I’ll be back in a while”. Then a different guy comes and gives me my ID back.

While they don’t run the background check they still need to verify the information is correct on the form the same as if they did run your background, name, address, SN, etc. The other guy is most likely the guy who double checked the info on your CWP and the firearm. The only difference is instead of writing down the transaction number and Brady ID from the FBI they just check a box that says you have a CWP and write down the license number.

^this. Double checking form entries.

Also, how is your handwriting? Handwriting has to be legible enough to beat audit scrutiny.

Edit i just remembered that PSA uses electronic forms; so disregard my handwriting point.

I mean don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t really bother me I was just curious. Thought maybe they were just giving me the “opportunity” to buy something else. This was my 5th firearms purchase there and it has been the same every time.

Howong did it take to get a background check
At palmetto…im wanting to buy one but its my first time

That totally depends on the NICS system. Seconds to minutes.

Ok thanks appreciate it

Most of mine have been approved in a few minutes. Some folks have to wait longer. Some get denied :man_shrugging:

Yea I am currently on day 4 about to be day 5 and I don’t even have a single ticket let alone misdemeanor or felony on my record but yet I am still waiting

IIRC the Brady Bill is 3 business days, not sure if PSA will roll on a Brady rule.

If you don’t put your SSN on the form, they may confuse you with someone else. It’s optional, but I always put it. There are probably hundreds of folks with the same name as you out there, and some have records.

The waiting period is a separate thing from the background check. Every background check that I have done came back in seconds.

My dad had a near perfect doppleganger for years. Same FULL name, same birthdate, born in the same county but different hospitals. When that guy wasn’t in jail he was wanted at every level and about twice a year we’d have an array of cops out front of our house on the loudspeaker. My dad would yell through the front door one line, “I’m coming out. You guys looking for a white guy or black guy?” There were more differences between the two of them, but this was the South in the 70’s and that was the efficient way of conveying the idea they were looking in the wrong place.

I always put all my info on the forms, too. Fill out paperwork for a security clearance one time and you’ll never worry about the govt knowing who you are ever again. Because they do. They have all the lists, and I’m on all of them.

I use my SSN and Still get delayed about every other time. @bonamoleonard

My buddy gets researching most of the time. Mine goes through instantly and I buy far too many guns though.

I do not use my SS# and have not had any issues. I have a CWP though.

From what I understand, PSA does not move forward with a purchase without a NICS approval.

I have several transfer customers whose NICS background checks are NEVER completed- no approval, no denial, they just sit in “researching” status until they expire in 30 days with no response. This is not a PSA issue, it’s an FBI/NICS issue.

While PSA can lawfully move forward with the purchase/transfer after 3 business days without a NICS response, but it seems to be a company policy to only move forward with an affirmative response. It’s a “better safe than sorry” approach, which is understandable considering how much ATF pressure they get.

In my experience, it is highly unlikely that they will ever get a response to your NICS check. It has nothing to do with you or PSA. It’s simply a failure of gun control.
