Hello, I’m having light primer strikes with my g5 AK. I’m having the issue with Tula and brown bear ammo. The brass stuff I’ve found is running ok. Problem is if I have an AK it should eat everything. I have less than 100 rounds through the gun.
Someone else posted about this a couple weeks ago. The problem was fixed by swapping to a hammer spring capable of igniting the harder primers used in steel-cased rounds.
The enhanced triggers that PSA puts in their AKs are better for shooting and accuracy, but the lighter hammer spring doesn’t lend well against harder primers.
From what it sounds like, this is an issue with other AKs too, not just PSAs.
The trigger in it is the ALG. Would that make a difference? Do they make a stronger spring for that trigger?
ALG does make a high energy spring for their AK triggers
Weird, I’ve put ALG triggers in all of my AK’s and shoot nothing but steel case ammo no problem. I better check my G5 since I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet.
ALG has a high energy main spring and recoil spring. Two inexpensive upgrades that will make an AK a little more reliable.
I sent my gf5 into psa and they replaced the bolt. I was having 5-10 light primer strikes per mag of tula. Send it in and get it fixed. Mine has work flawlessly since getting it back
I actually just went through the light strikes with 3 GF5’s I purchased. My fix was replacing the firing pin on all 3 weapons. I measured the overall length of the PSA pin which came out to 3.265, the factory spec is 3.284. So my pins were short by .019. Replaced all 3 pins with surplus Polish NOS pins from Apex. Have since run 500 plus rounds through all 3 rifles without any hiccups.
Out of curiosity , how long did it take them to get you a shipping label? It’s been over a week since I provided them the information that they needed with no response. FYI I got through about 50 rounds then every round was a failure to fire.
They email the shipping label. Check your spam folder. Took about 10-12 days from shipping to return to my door
did you have any problem with small pieces of primer in the firing pin channel before or after swapping the pins?
Had it before swapping the pins, since the pins have neen changed I have had no problems in over 500 rounds.
I replaced my recoil spring with a mcarbo enhanced spring. Cycles steel no problem. I have some wear on the bolt but before adding anything. Had light primer strikes also on red army ammo which is gone now.
Thanks. I ordered a longer new polish firing pin for my new GF5. Now it functions fine with golden tiger. Barnaul wasn’t an issue. The other problem was trigger guard/mag release too far forward. I had to sand the mag well opening. Only mag that fit was theirs. The circle 10s still don’t fit well. They hit the cross piece/ rivet aft of mag well. Other magazines now work. I thought it wasn’t worth returning just for one mag type. This gun’s hammer is very close to recoil spring vs my definitive arms kit gun.
I didn’t but hadn’t put many rounds through it
Ive now ran over 1000 rounds in both mine and my wifes GF5’s with no issues since the surplus Polish pin swap. I have the same mag issue on both GF5’s. Palmettos center support rivet is where my problem occurs. Most surplus mags and drums fit with no modifications. Ive used Yugo, Hungarian, East German, Russian slab side, Bulgarian steel (new production), Bakelites (both Izzy and Tula), Polish, Romanian, and Chinese surplus mags. Used South Korean (KCI 30 rd) commercial and KCI 75rd drum, all with no issues. Mags that I had to fit due to the center support rivet contacting the mag (I filed an angle in the rear of the mag to clear the rivet) are. Bulgarian slab side polymer. South Korean (KCI) 40 rd steel. Romanian 75rd drum (I did not modify this drum as it fits in all my other AK’s both Combloc and American, just not the Palmetto’s). Also keep in mind AK’s are not mil-spec and may require fitting of many parts, thats what makes them AK’s! Welcome to the forums!
