Rear Carry Handle Sight Has a Lot of Play in IT

The attached video shows the amount of play in my PSA 20" upper with the rear carry handle sight dialed up. When it is dialed all the way down, there is no play. Is this normal, or should I contact customer support about a replacement?

That play should not be there. When you say “all the way dialed down” are you referring to the left/right adjustment dial?

No, the UP - DN dial. The only time there is no play is when it is dialed all the way down.

So you are turning the wheel? I always have that tight on my carry handles and adjust elevation on the FSB.

Can you send a link to what you bought?

I have read several articles and watched YouTube videos about zeroing an AR-15 with the carry handle sight and most say to set it on a certain setting and then you only need to move it to another setting for longer distances. It’s rather confusing, and I have tried it yet .

If I dial the knob all the way down tight, there is no play. My video was taken with the sight set on the recommended setting.

Its not missing the little ball/spring is it? That should force it back into place based on the reading I’ve been doing on a2 sights. Apparently the movement is normal but the ball detent and spring should keep it aligned.

Link is bad on my end.

Good call @GuitarGuy I am attaching a few additional photos. I flipped the peephole back, and if you look closely, you don’t see a ball. In another photo, it looks like the UP arrow is pointing to a small metal ball. The photo doesn’t capture it, but in the light, the ball looks shiny.

I also included a photo of the handguard. Nothing to do with my sight issue, but there is a gap between both halves of the handguard on the end where it attaches to the delta ring. The handguard is not loose, and I attribute it to poor moulding. Since I will probably be calling Customer Service on the sight issue, I wonder if it is worth raising the issue.

Looks like the ball is there. Handguard is completely normal.

From my reading the sight will have some play buy the purpose of the ball detent is to keep it back in the 3moa standard that is an a2 sight.

i always adjust using the fsb as well.. how far are you shooting? i never adjusted even for the 200yrd half bodies. brb have to go reasseble a carry handle carbine, the a2 is legit, better time at the range imo

edit: and i start by having the fsb all the way down.. and the back completely center.. and adjust from there, seems to be the quickest for me to get zeroed.. note i have been using a 10.5 primarly with a2, currently mbus actually just for looks but i always end up mising the peep hole..

Thanks for the input. Everything I read says to adjust the front sight first. I will mostly be shooting at a range, so no long distances.

Anyone have a manual for the A2 carry handle sight with schematic? if so, I would appreciate someone sending me a link or file. If that detent ball in my picture is in the right location, then it is not holding the sight in place. I don’t have any experience with early M16s. When I was going through AOCS in the Navy, they were still issuing M-1s.

Question- is an A2 sight different when it’s a detachable carry handle vs integral to the upper? These photos depict an integral handle upper.

You might give a look at this description of zeroing on AR15,com:

https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/RIBZ–Revised-Improved-Battlesight-Zero/18-328143/

It includes a rough schematic of the carry handle sight. If the first post doesn’t get you where you need to go, the subsequent 11 pages of posts probably will.

Below are photos of an FN-15 and PSA-15 carry handle sights to give a basis for comparison.

The wheel is an adjustment for different ranges, once sighted in correctly. Works wonderfully well. Check out 8mmMauserMans video “100 and 50/200 Meter Zero with A2/Detachable Carry Handles”.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I am going to be out of town for the next couple of weeks, so I won’t be able to work on my sight issues until I return. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Yeah, there should be zero wiggle/wobble at all. I have a JE Machine Tech rear carry handle sight and it is locked in tight. I looked it up and they no longer make them. Probably because they are in California and Needledick the Bugfckr Newsome the commie limp wristed douchebag found out they made scary black rifle stuff…
