Saber Upper barrel nut mounting threads issue

I purchased this Saber builders kit a couple months ago. Today I tried test fitting the barrel nut to the upper. I got about 1/3 of a turn before it stopped and would no longer continue to fasten. I’ve never ran into this issue before with other builds. I’m guessing it’s build up of paint in the threads. I don’t believe the threads are damaged. I did try the barrel nut on a different nitrated upper and it went on without a problem.
For those of you that have dealt with this issue before, how did you go about removing paint from the threads? I guess the threads being out of spec is a possibility. I’ll call PSA before I attempt anything just to make sure it won’t void warranty.

I dont like this. Id clean that up a bit.

Leading thread on pic one and pic two look galled/chewed… ??

Yeah, it doesn’t turn past that section. I seen that shiny section, but wasn’t sure if it was just built up paint in the thread causing that. I guess it could be damaged threads. I’ll have to look up the thread pitch and see if have that size thread restorer file.

I’d call first.

I just tried a Griffin Armament barrel nut on the PSA Saber upper. It went on butter smooth. The PSA barrel nut is a pretty tight fit and won’t seat all the way down on any upper I have. Just thought I would share this find.

And I was thinking…
just hit it with your purse :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

No really I appreciate you pointing that out because I would have just cranked on it.

Are you using anti sieze? That will help.

I’m going to before trying anything else.

No problem. Just trying to look over every possibility. So far it is pointing to the barrel nut being the issue. I hope posting stuff like this may be of some help to others in the future.

No. I was just doing test fits of pieces. I didn’t get very far.

I have found that sometimes binding happens because no lube is used. Even with a test fit.

I’m going to blast the threads in the barrel nut with some solvent and make sure there isn’t any debris in there I’m not seeing. I’ll dry test fit again, then try lubing it like you are suggesting. What do you use? I’ve got Super Lube, Geissele’s Go-Juice 0000 grease, and anti-seize on hand.

Its two different metals so you need to use anti seize.

Copper kote anti-sieze would introduce a 3rd. Aero-shell grease.

Just ordered a tube.

Awesome input and resolution! Glad you posted this.

Good news. The new barrel nut goes on flawlessly. Bad news, it’s the wrong one. The Hex barrel nut is the correct one for this handguard. Speaking of the handguard. I’m just now noticing that the picatiny styles are different on the upper and handguard :expressionless:.

Just an update on this for anybody that cares or might run into the same issue down the road. It was bad threads in the barrel nut. I eventually got the right replacement. I’ll post a build thread on my Sabre Builders kit. This is going to be a fun one for me.
