SBA3 buffer tube

Im new here but my lower sba3 kit that i bought came with a buffer tube with no hole in it for the buffer spring retainer, wouldnt be an issue but i also purchased a sylvan arms folding stock adapter, so it doesnt hold the spring when folded, this cant be normal and with over an hour hold time ive sent psa a message but havent heard back, anybody else seen this?

I’ve never seen a buffer tube with a hole in it, but I have limited expertise.

I’ve always threaded the buffer slightly over the spring retainer to hold it in.

I have the Sylvan and they offer a much better buffer retainer in my opinion…

They sent it to me for free. My retainers were bending and breaking.

Sylvan Buffer Nut

I also use an H1 sound mitigation buffer, and the hollow aluminum extension vs the steel extension that comes with the folder was key in getting my 300 Blackout to reliably cycle supers and subs without a suppressor.

The retainer is on the lower not the tube.

Correct the retainer has to pop through the tube to hold the spring correct? Or maybe im threading the tube in to far? I can post pics tonight for clarification

You’re threading the tube in too far

It only threads to right before the pin, with the tube covering the larger OD to retain it in place

Or you could just not use one. It’s one (or two) less parts to potential be rattling around the fcg if that retainer snaps off. Not likely to happen but I just catch the buffer on the rear takedown lug and hold it with a finger when I’m taking the upper off. The carrier will slam back into the buffer with or without it.

I’ve had one break, and the replacement bend. That’s why I went to the retaining nut.

Also, he has a folder. So he needs something to retain the buffer and spring.

Oooh, my brain forgot the folder setup. Definitely need one for that. Please disregard my oopsie

See how theirs no cutout for the retainer in the folding adapter to go through, i guess i could just screw it in so far but then when i tighten the castle nut the stock turns because theirs nothing to hold it straight and capture the spring

This is the folder attached to the lower properly its the folder to the buffer tube with no cutout or hole for the retainer on backside of folder

The tube doesn’t need a cut out. And the end plate holds the whole thing straight, using the groove in the tube.

GG is right. End plates keep things from rotating

Again, I will emphasize that YOU DON’T WANT THE PINS. I’ve seen a couple instances where the pin breaks, locks up the rifle, and then you can’t separate the upper from the lower.

This is how mine is now assembled after I had issues, and it’s been 100% reliable since I deleted the pins

End plate on pistol where I attach my sling

End plate that keeps buffer tube from rotating

Buffer nut that keeps my silent spring captured

Are you doing a side folding SBA brace?

As stated above, the tube for the SBA wouldn’t have a hole like the tube for the side-folder. The sba tube is designed to be used on an ordinary lower, where the tube butts up against the retainer to keep it in. It looks like the sylvan has a hole in it to achieve the same function, and also so it fits flush with the end of the adapter.

As suggested above, remove the retaining pin and spring completely, screw your SBA tube in, but leave space to screw the retaining cap/buffer nut on from the front side, and use the retaining cap/buffer nut supplied by sylvan for their apparatus instead of the retaining pin and the cap/nut. There’s no need for two retainers.

I hope that makes sense.

Hey guys i really appreciate the help ive reached out to sylvan to get the to send me a buffer nut retainer as i like the fitment of that better, this forumn was a big help, ive only built one ar other than this one and i was kind of stumped

This was my first folder, and then I had to complicate things with the silent spring.

The pin issue was frustrating to say the least.

I really want the Law folder to clean this up a bit, but I haven’t sat down and figured out if my parts will be compatible, or if I’ll need new stuff.

I’m also waiting to see what FJB , AFT, and the DoJ do with the brace nonsense.

I’m glad you got this worked out to your satisfaction.
