I haven’t a clue weather such a barrel exists, but is anyone currently manufacturing a 16” .223/5.56 barrel with a 1-in-12 or 1:14 twist rate specifically?
I have an idea that a slower (than current industry standard) twist .223/5.56 barrel will be more accurate with the cmmg .22lr conversion bolt than typical 1:7, 1:8, 1:9 barrels. Dedicated 22lr barrels are generally 1:16, from what I am finding. I would prefer to simply build another m193 capable upper, yet with a slower twist barrel (hopefully, capable of better accuracy with 22lr for practice) and continue to use this conversion bolt more effectively. Any ideas, aside from throwing an old 20” surplus barrel at a gunsmith to cut and thread?
Any help in this search is appreciated. I have yet to find a slow twist 16” barrel anywhere…
I dont know that that exists. You will probably have to have a custom barrel made.
Old m16s used to be 1:12. No 5.56 barrel is manufactured to work better with .22, they’re all manufactured for 5.56/.223. You’ll need a dedicated .22 barrel if you want a better twist rate for .22.
I think that a dedicated .22lr upper with a 1:16 twist will suit your needs the best.
I certainly seems that is the best option. It certainly doesn’t make sense to go spend money on gunsmithing an old slow twist AR barrel, and I’ve come to the conclusion that what I’m looking for doesn’t exist without custom order.
Looks like I “need” to build another upper!
Agreed, I am simply trying to find a happy medium between accuracy w/conversion bolt and usability with .223/5.56. I am starting to find the idea too far fetched. Dedicated upper build time it is!
