Suggestions about build for an AR15

I would like to build an AR15 in 308 or 223. Any suggestions on what to build?

Going to need a hell of a lot more information than that. Namely budget, intended use, and possible use.

Lower cost gun - maybe $500-$750 or so. I want to deer hunt and target shoot with it.

I wouldn’t deer hunt with an AR-15, but that’s just me. I know people that do and have success, but you’re pretty much limited to head and neck shots and much closer ranges than an AR308. Having said that I have no problem shooting the biggest of hogs with 5.56 but personally I just don’t do it with deer.

You could mate this

To this

For $760 but then you would need optics or quality iron sights.

Another option would be a not 5.56/223 caliber in an AR15. You could build a 6.8/6.5 Grendel/300 Blackout/7.62x39 with quality budget optics well within your desired price range and still throw at least 100 grains of lead down range.

I thought an AR308 would be fine to hunt deer with. If it’s not, let me know. Thank you for the info.

Hell no that’s plenty and my favorite gun for the purpose. There’s a lot of people that will with 223 but I’m not one of those. With current inventory and prices you would be over budget. There’s usually at least one “blemished” AR10 upper in stock at a great discount where you could get your build under $750 but I guess they’re all sold out from the Christmas rush. That would be another solid option is wait for some blemished items to be available and save a hundred or two.

If you build on the ar15 platform: 6.8spc is a fantastic deer round (similar to a 270).

One of my 6.8s:

For an ar10, 308 is great. If you go this size, make sure you get both the upper and lower receiver from the same manufacturer as their is not a standard like ar15s.

So, that me make sure I got this all correct -
the 6.8 SPC round works in an AR15
the 308 round works in an AR10?

Sorry, I’m such a newbie with this all. Just have never built a gun before and want to get it right.

That’s correct. The main two in an AR10 are 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. Pretty much any other caliber
(6.8 included) will work with the smaller AR15 lower receiver.

Like GuitarGuy said and I often incorrectly assume everybody knows it’s best to go with a single brand/manufacturer when going the AR10 route. The sizes and tolerances are nowhere near as uniform as AR15. Even those that claim to be DPMS pattern don’t often fit together correctly. With different manufacturers you might get lucky and everything lines up and goes bang, might need to do some filing and fitting, or worst case it can never go bang.

Yes, 6.8spc in an ar15 platform, 308 in an ar10 platform.

Cool, I really appreciate both of your time to help educate this “newbie” to the AR-15 and AR-10 worlds. I hope each of you have a great weekend. I think I like the 6.8 SPC round, so I may go that direction. Any suggestions with an upper and lower for the 6.8 SPC round?

Could always build a .458 SOCOM on the AR15. Plenty good for deer and the errant dinosaur that gets loose. And it’s a fricking .458 SOCOM!

Any ar15 lower will work. A few things about 6.8spc:

Ar15performance (ARP) hands down makes the best barrels, and I recommend you buy and then build your own. PSA, Wilson Combat, Bison Armory, and Blackstone (uses ARP barrels) make good uppers also. The 6.8 pmags ONLY work with the LWRC Six8 pattern lower receivers. Most everyone else (including PSA) use metal mags (My preference as I use pmags with other calibers and it keeps me from mixing a rifle up with the wrong ammo).

Toolcraft makes great BCGs.

6.8 is a soft shooting round (you want a midlength gas system) that is good 600yrds+. My other 6.8 (below, 16" ARP barrel) has been out to 700yrds and the target below is a 100yrd zero.

It is my favorite caliber to shoot and I have done lots of research, so if you have questions ask away.

GuitarGuy - the LWRC Six8 receiver as much as I want to spend for the whole rifle. Ha!!! Just starting out building a gun- can’t break the bank.

@bluegrassbanjo01 give me a budget $ and I will be glad to help you source parts.

then you need to build a ar15 not an ar10. start with the cheaper gun to build. the ar10s get expensive quick, not that ar15s dont, but ar10s inherently are more expensive parts.

This is great advice! Everyone needs an AR15 to work on and learn how to use. Bullets are not too expensive and it’s a great platform to learn on. You can deck it out later - having it in-hand right now (with no bling) seems to be getting more important as the flying monkeys attack our 2nd Amendment.

Learn as much as you can! Watch “beginner” Youtube videos and read gun blogs, as well as stuff here.

Addiction…ain’t that the truth.

Careful! AR building is addictive! Once you start you just keep wanting to do another. First builds are generally 5.56 or .223 Wylde. Cheapest and most abundant ammo. Depending on where you live there may be requirements for the type of game you are looking to hunt. Some locations require the “Straight wall cartridges” to hunt deer. .450 Bushmaster and .350 Legend meet this requirement.
