Trigger Issues

I’m having trouble with a trigger that is releasing the hammer upon resetting. Here’s the back story, so this is my 6th AR build from an 80%. All done the same way basically all the same internals. Lower parts group is the basic package from PSA. This one Rifle is the only one that is giving me any problems. So when firing and you keep the trigger pressed, lightly letting up the there’s no audible click of it resetting, it simply fires another round. If I completely let off the trigger after firing it will reset like normal. I have checked clearances, done measurements and reassembled a few times, nothing changes. Does anyone have any suggestions on what is going on?

I haven’t installed a trigger group from any of my working rifles yet to see if that fixes it. I would rather get a better understanding of why this is happening. Thanks

Sounds like a spring is in wrong. Make sure you have trigger, hammer, and disconnector springs in right.

If the disconnect spring is upside down, or not fully seated, it can cause issues with resets, hammer-follow, etc. (OR as a friend of mine had - the wrong spring can cause weirdness - he had accidentally put a bolt-catch spring in his)

I would start there.

Also pay attention to the hook on the disconnector and the hammer - burrs and rough edges can also cause them to hang.

There CAN be more than one issue simultaneously, btw.

Welcome to the forum @Mattwbrock82.
Sounds like you are getting some good advice from these guys.

Thanks for sharing, I’ll recheck the springs tomorrow and make sure they are installed correctly. I did tear down and reassemble earlier today but did so under frustration so could have easily missed something maybe.

Also fully inspect every part, could be as simple as a burr in the wrong spot or out of spec part. If it keeps happening a simple fix could be a cassette type trigger install.

Look over the spring orientation first and foremost. That’s where I would start as well. If everything there is correct, I would remove the upper completely, then inspect the trigger group altogether. If the Hammer, Trigger and Disconnector springs are all correctly installed, I would next look at the disconnector hook. Are there any burrs in the hook? This could be the issue. You should be able to pull the trigger and hold the trigger rearward, manually reset the hammer, and be able to reset the trigger in two fashions: 1. once the hammer is cocked while holding pressure on the trigger, slowly letting out the trigger, the disconnector should drop first stage and allow sear engagement to catch. 2. once the hammer cocked while holding pressure on the trigger, quickly letting out the trigger, the disconnector should drop first stage and allow the sear engagement to catch as well. Those are always two tests I perform on any new trigger group I install. Hope this helps bud, let us know how things go, and what the issue is!

Welcome to the forum! You got some great advice. And yes let us know what you found.

Thanks to all for your advice. I never narrowed it down to a specific issue, I removed everything and all the springs and everything was installed correctly, could not see any burrs or deformation in any of the hooks or anything. Reassembled……same problem.

Removed everything again and just lightly hit everything with a stone (one I use on my fishing hooks). Reassembled and everything worked fine. Just need to hone the hooks a little. I guess even though you couldn’t see it visually, there was something there. Blows my mind how tight that tolerance really is. Thanks to everyone!!

Nice! Love figuring out a troublesome issue, Google research, Forum advice and questions with people who know way more than I’ll ever know, and getting back into the trenches and fixing a problem lol. I’ll tinker with just about anything, except HVAC, those Men are like wizards to me lol. Good Lord I haven’t sharpened fishing hooks since I was a kid. I’ve got some stones and compounds, but I guess I’ve become to busy (LAZY) most likely and just usually buy whatever size hooks I’m in t he market for. Glad ya figured it out tho :+1:

Yeah, everyone I talked to before posting here just said to buy better parts and install. That would have fixed the problem but I really wanted to learn more about it and to understand more about how all the parts work together. I tinker a lot and can fix most about anything.

I usually just sharpen the hooks on my higher end lures once a year or so, same stone also sharpens serrated blades so it’s useful. Thanks once again.
