What size allen key to remove the M-Lok handguard?

Cleaning my rifle after a house fire and need to remove the handguard to get to the barrel. What size Allen key do I need to remove the bolts? All of my tools are currently buried in debris, so just gonna buy one.

Not real sure. May just want to buy a cheap Harbor Freight set. Sorry about your house. That sucks.

oh man im sorry to hear about your house fire. unfortunately different hand guards can and often do use different size allen keys , that said, if you’re gonna buy one, i’d just buy a set of metric and a set of standard. that way you can have them to use on all things if needed cause often some handguards and optics and stuff have different size allen screws on them too.. so you may need more than one key is what im saying.

Thanks, y’all. Harbor Freight has been getting lots of my money recently. Lol time to give them more.

Fortunately only my Savage got burned. Everything else just has smoke on it.

Thanks for the HFT idea. Grabbed a set and pulled the hand guard. Was able to scrub the barrel down, dry, and wipe with a silicone cloth. Then dropped the bit on the patio in the dark before I could put it back together. :man_facepalming: lol, will find it and get her back into service soon.

You made the right choice with HF. About a third the price Lowe’s charge me for their cheap Kobalt garbage.

Hope you recover soon from your devastating loss, I can’t even imagine. Well sorta, our house was destroyed in a Cat 5 Hurricane 7-1/2 years ago.

God bless, and protect you and your family…

Thanks! Got it last night. Think it’s a 4mm for the big ones and a 2.5mm for the set screws underneath, on mine.

Save some time and money and go out and buy one of these 1/4 bit sets Harbor Freights used to sell them. you can get them on Amazon, I think they’re around 30 bucks when i got mine a while back.

Update: after a few days of searching i broke down and bought another set from HF. Got the rifle back together, looked down in my toolbox and there it was, sitting in the top tray where I had looked numerous times, because thats where I thought it had landed.

Got two sets now.

Ordered some special bolts for this project here at work - I put them away with the other stainless hardware in meantime, whilst awaiting another part. Came time to put it all together, searched for days and couldn’t find them.

So, re-ordered from the Vendor, to get the dang ball rolling. New ones arrived, I wasn’t able to get to the project immediately, so put THOSE bolts with the other stainless fasteners… right on top of the previously-missing fasteners I had just re-ordered…

dang man.. thats my type of luck though.. itd do the same thing to me.. .and like you said you got two of them now, so one to use and one to lose by training a family member how to read them and measure them, then give them the measuring device of their own. ;0
