5.56 vs. .30 Caliber Cans: Which is right for you?
One of the most common questions AR-15 owners ask is whether to buy a dedicated 5.56mm suppressor or a .30 caliber option.
- Dedicated 5.56 Suppressors: generally offer the best sound reduction at the shooter's ear because the bore is tighter, trapping more gas. They are often lighter and shorter.
- .30 Caliber Suppressors: offer incredible versatility. You can use them on your 5.56 AR-15 (with very little loss in performance) and swap them to your .308 hunting rifle or .300 Blackout upper.
Tuning Your AR-15 for a Suppressor
Adding a suppressor increases "backpressure," which can force gas into your face and cause your rifle to cycle too fast. To get the best experience, we recommend these upgrades:
- Adjustable Gas Block: The most effective way to tune your rifle. It allows you to restrict the gas flow, smoothing out the recoil impulse.
- Gas-Busting Charging Handle: Features a raised shelf or vents to redirect gas away from your eyes.
- Heavier Buffer (H2 or H3): A heavier buffer slows down the bolt carrier group, preventing wear and improving feeding reliability.
AR-15 Suppressor FAQ
Do I need a "Quick Detach" (QD) Mount?
QD mounts are highly recommended for AR-15s. They allow you to easily attach and detach the suppressor without threading it on (which can come loose under fire). They also often act as a sacrificial baffle, protecting the suppressor's blast chamber from wear.
Can I shoot .22 LR through my AR-15 Suppressor?
Generally, no. Unless your suppressor is explicitly rated as "user-serviceable" (can be taken apart for cleaning), you should avoid shooting dirty rimfire ammo through a sealed centerfire rifle can. It will clog the baffles over time. Use a dedicated Rimfire Suppressor instead.
What is the best ammo for a suppressed AR-15?
For standard 5.56 AR-15s, standard ammo will still have a "sonic crack." For the quietest experience possible, consider building a .300 Blackout Upper and shooting subsonic ammunition. This eliminates the sonic crack for near-silent operation.
