When the force required to turn the bushing with a screwdriver surpasses the strength of the bushing's narrow rim, the rim begins to shear. Without a preventive measure, the rim can easily peel away as the driving forces increasingly act on a smaller cross-sectional area. The Challis bushing extractor supports the top of the bushing by clamping it tightly against the tool. It also conforms closely to the bushing's shape at the rim's circumference and the grip screw prevents material from peeling inward. Consequently, the rim remains intact and the driving forces are distributed across the entire cross-section of the rim.
