300 BLK - Input Wanted on Buffer

Good Evening,

I’m sorry if this is repetitive or common knowledge, I’ve been looking for a bit and couldn’t find anything to address my specific question. I’m shooting a PSA 16" 300 BLK upper and noticing that the recoil feels more like a slap than a push. It just feels off. It isn’t unmanageable by any means, but I’m wondering if changing the buffer would improve the recoil. The little bit of information I have found seems to indicate that swapping to an H2 buffer might offer the improvement I am seeking; however, this recommendation wasn’t specific to a 300 BLK and I new to actually customizing my rifle at all. My other AR15 is Sport 2 in 5.56 that I’ve run completely stock so I just don’t understand the consequences of switching to a heavier buffer, especially with consideration for the pistol gas system in this particular situation.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Edit: Adding link to specific upper, if it makes a difference. https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-pistol-length-300aac-blackout-1-8-nitride13-5-lightweight-m-lok-upper-with-bcg-ch-mbus-sight-set-5165448559.html

most of my rifles i run with a h2 buffer just to keep the recoil manageable, i think if you wre to go to a h2 you would be happy with the results. I run them in pistols, i run them in carbines and rifle lengths as well… so i think it would be good for you in your setup.

by the way, welcome to the forums.

H2 should work for you. Gas systems can be finicky. An h2 may allow you to shoot subs, but with supers shouldnt be an issue. Since it is a 16", you dont need to shoot subs unless you have a can anyway.

To specify, just shooting supers at the moment. Unlikely to get a can in the future. Thank you to both of you for the responses!

I switched to an H2 in my 300, but it’s a pistol, 8.5”.

Much better than the carbine buffer it came with. And as a bonus, I can reliably cycle both supers and subs without a can. And the only reason I occasionally shoots subs is I find a deal, or they’re PD rounds.

Just wanted to give an update, I did pick up an H2 buffer and got out to the range today. I can’t believe the difference that simple change made in the recoil. Thanks for the replies!

Edit: Posted too fast. Wanted to also state, for anyone in the future who runs across this thread with a similar question in mind, I ran 100 additional rounds through it today after the H2 buffer was installed. There were no negative consequences, everything cycled properly. I am still shooting just supers at this time, so I can’t give feedback on impact to cycling subs.

It may be best if you got an adjustable gas block.

One other note…when it is tuned in it will feel great and eject right at the four-o-clock position every time from your shooting position. Adjust block to where it will not eject and then start to adjust till it will eject and then add 1/4-1/2 turn and lock it down and check to see if your ejects are landing at four-o-clock position from your shooting stance.

I use H 2 buffers in all my 300 Blackouts be they pistol or carbine gas systems, that assures no feed function issues and smoothes out recoil impulse.

I know this thread is several months old now but I’ve got an acceptable amount of range time under my belt with this setup now and wanted to say that swapping to the H2 buffer was the right move. It was exactly the improvement I was looking for in terms of felt recoil impulse and the weapon has functioned flawlessly with the H2 buffer.

In truth, it was something that I’d just gotten accustomed to on my rifle over the past few months and no longer gave any thought but I recently shot a similar rifle that didn’t have the H2 buffer installed and it became immediately evident that the recoil was noticeably difference in a negative way, reminding me that I’d made this change and confirming that it was definitely the right decision for me and wasn’t just a confirmation bias situation on my part to justify my purchase.

Just wanted to post this update in hopes that if anyone else comes along with a similar question in mind, they can use it as a resource for making their own decision. I still haven’t shot any subs through it, as I don’t have a can, so just keep in mind my opinion and feedback is based on supers only.

Awsome news! I did the same switch to H2 in my 16" rifle running game ammo.

@GuitarGuy Tagging you specifically because you seem to have a lot of good experience to give folks and I’m hoping you might be able to weigh in here too.

Came into some funds. If I wanted to give a silent capture spring a try, is it safe to say a 1:1 swap from my current H2 to the JP-SCS H2 is viable? Following their flow chart, it seems they want to guide me to the standard JP-SCS since its 300blk but since I already run an H2 in my rifle flawlessly and enjoy it, I’m obviously prone to looking at the JP’s H2 model. Thoughts?

I would get the H2 version.

I also just purchased the standard pa-15 16” 300 blk with the pistol length non-adjustable gas block and the buffer and spring that PSA puts in their 300 blk standard pa-15. I am shooting the AAC 110 grn v-max and I have the Texas Silencer Company Hunter 308 suppressor. The carbine ejects right at the 3 o-clock position and it leaves the bolt open on the last round. However, the recoil is sharper than I like. I am wondering if I should order the PSA low profile adjustable gas block and one of the adjustable buffers. Should I leave the carbine as is due to the results I am experiencing??? Bob

Will going to a third party buffer do anything to my lifetime warranty???

I shot the carbine with the Rugged Alaskan 360 and it was very over gassed like ejecting at the 1 o-clock position. The Hunter 308 suppressor worked perfect except for the “slappy” recoil that I would like to soften.

Shouldn’t but the associated tinkering to get it running right they won’t likely do that for you.

Thanks cause getting ahold of a “tec rep” is impossible at PSA.

Welcome Robert and thank you for your service. I have the same rifle and just a drop in cassette CMC trigger is all l did. It runs faithful unsurpessed subs or supers. Definitely can hear the buffer especially with ear muffs. Ear plugs for me far less. I’d leave the gasblock as is.
