I shot AAC 208gr A-Max subsonic 300 blk yesterday. I was sighting in a new Eotech EXPS 2-2 on my Daniel Defense DDM4 300s 10.3” with a Dead Air Sandman S suppressor. My shots were all over the paper and I couldn’t get anything dialed in. I’ve sighted in many guns so this was highly unusual especially for that gun. After shooting 30 rounds I checked to see if there was a problem with my can. I took it off and noticed small pieces rattling around inside my can. I shook it and small pieces of copper fell out of the can. The staff and myself inspected the can for a baffle strike with none to be seen. I bought a box of Fiocchi subsonic rounds to see if it was the ammo or my gun. The Fiocchi ammo performed well and by the end of the 20 rounds I was practically putting bullets through the same hole at 25 yards. I’m planning on shooting some more of it today to document with video and pictures what I find. If it’s bad ammo I plan to see if I can send it back. That’s no good and dangerous!!!
Just so everyone knows, we are not ignoring @robertscottham 's post. We have been communicating via PM. I don’t want anyone to think we are not offering him help!
The issue I had with AAC 300 blk was bad crimp in two boxes. I reached out to them with pics and they quickly responded. They wanted the lot number of the two boxes ( you find it inside the box lid). They sent me replacements quick at their expense.
This is 100% true. PSA reps have been great to talk to and have been very responsive!
I have the targets marked in the bottom right corner. I had NO issues with 60 rounds of the AAC 208gr A-Max bullets. Both with a suppressor and without. It could have been a bad bullet or some other issue. I’ll keep my eye on things as I use these rounds. It definitely made me feel better about the ammo but I’ll still be wary or it. It was compared to Fiocchi 220gr HPBT. Both brands shot well without issue.
Just to clarify l contacted AAC directly. My thoughts was go directly to the vendor. And it was a fast result.
I’ve been in contact with them. As it stands now I’m going to go with the ammo I purchased. It could have been a bad round or a fluke thing at this point. I’ve sent the lot number over to them just in case. This was definitely the strangest issue I’ve ever had with ammo before.
I experienced a similar issue years ago with some 124g 9mm from Freedom Munitions. Shots were all over the place at 10 yards using a Springfield XDM 4.5 and Silencerco Hybrid 46. When I took the booster off the suppressor to clean it afterwards several small chunks of heavily fouled copper fell out. There was no damage to the suppressor thus I can only surmise there was some form of jacket separation occurring with the ammo. I’m lucky there was no damage to the can. I switched to using S&B 150g in that configuration and it was flawless / on target. As for the suspect Freedom ammo I never messed with contacting the manufacturer and used what I had left unsuppressed through IIRC a Glock 17. It was only maybe 100 rounds and I never thought to try it on paper, rather used it shooting Osage Oranges back in the woods.
EDIT: Found some pics…
Jacket separation didn’t seem to affect the oranges in any unexpected way… ![]()
This is exactly was I found in my can. I did have some chunks of copper as well. No damage to the can thank fully. I’m in contact with PSA about it so hopefully we can track down what happened.
