Can I carry a gun into the store?

I am very confused about the “school zone” surrounding the west Ashley store. Does this mean no concealed carry? I noticed the sign when leaving the last time I visited the store. It basically said don’t bring your gun in unless it is in a locked case. Does this include someone with a carry permit? If you can’t carry a firearm here legally they should def be more clear about it applying to carry permits as well. Next time I go I will ask an associate but thought it was interesting enough to ask you guys and gals. Here is a crappy photo of the sign. Just wanted some clarification.

I have no info on this store, but I can relay a fun bit of math. A 1000’ foot radius around a single point is ~72 acres. Around a normal size building/grounds the GFZ could easily get into the hundreds of acres.

I am all about school safety. I have school age children, but there is a point where you can’t even decipher what is legal. Especially when most of it is “security theater” that doesn’t prevent anything. It just provides a prosecutor more charges after the fact. Criminals don’t follow the law. That’s why they are criminals.

For what its worth…there is not a concealed carry sign on the door, and if you read the sign it uses language such as “may be”. In other words, they dont want any of their customers to jammed up on a law they may not even know about.

That is why I am so confused. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t just use the no concealable weapons allowed if it was the case. At least they would have a sign explaining that a permit doesn’t allow you to carry on the premises.

if this is what i think it is like, this is my take on it. Here in columbia there is a range in our store. I dont think w.ashley has one, but we do. I made the mistake taking in a mil surp once without a case on it. The range masters all had a duck about the m1 carbine being “out of a case for transport” and almost wouldnt let me in the range to shoot her. I think they pretty much demand any weapon to be in a case or bag of some sort if it is going to come into the store. That however, does NOT include your concealed carry gear. That stuff, being concealed carry, is fine to carry in concealed. This however, is kinda stating no open carry just in case to keep you from getting jammed up is my theory. again this is just my thoughts on it… my .02… ymmv.

Not anymore. They have been just letting you walk out with them. Not sure what the deal is

Most firearm stores post a sign stating weapons must be in case for those bringing weapons in for service.

There is a sign on the door of the Ridgeland store which states that a holster is not a case

I would think that sign is for the range. They don’t want people walking in holding a gun in their hand. Even in a holster.

I was responding to the previous post. I would think its as you said it’s that they don’t want people walking around carrying an unholstered gun. I wear my holstered gun (concealed) into the store all of the time.

@kriscbt Because of the stores distance to a nearby school all firearms being moved between customer vehicles and the store must be in a locked container, NOT INCLUDING YOUR CONCEALED CARRY. I don’t know if this is a local, state, or federal law but it’s something this particular location must abide by. If you ever need to transport a firearm into the store and don’t have a case, just ask one of the associates inside for one, as they have a few that are “loaners.”

“South Carolina generally prohibits possessing a firearm on any premises or property owned, operated, or controlled by a private or public school, college, university, technical college, or other post-secondary institution, or in any publicly-owned building, without the express permission of the authorities in charge”. I’m guessing PSA has agreements in place of their stores within a certain distance of SC schools that they will prohibit carries to and from store without being secured in a locked case, and NO - this doesn’t exempt CWP holders from abiding by said agreements. Myrtle Beach store not near any schools so you’re good with a CWP - confirmed verbally by staff at the store - I asked when I first went in. Hope this helps!

I know many of the gun store owners in Florence. As a general rule they like a firearm that is being brought into their store to be in a case, with the magazine out, the action open or a flag in it if possible. It can be disconcerting at times when you are dealing with multiple customers and another customer walks in with a firearm not in a case with the magazine in it and the action closed. True story here, one of my good friends owns a gun store. He knows that I do some gunsmithing just for friends and family. The owner of a firearm had been having problems with his AR15 not fully going into battery every couple of rounds. He didn’t buy the AR15 from my friends store and because of liability issues he didn’t want to work on it. My friend asked me if I would look at it and see if the problem was something noticeable. The owner of the firearm was a new gun owner and had just come from the firing range. When I was handed the weapon the first thing that I did was put the safety on, remove the mag and clear the weapon. When I cleared the weapon guess what came out and fell on the floor. You guessed it a live round. You can see where this senario could have been disastrous. There have been many people shot in gun stores from an accidental discharge from a customer’s personal firearm. You can see why not having a firearm in a case would make gun store employees nervous. Also in today’s age you never know what a person is going to do with weapon that they bring into a gun store.

Yep, a holster safely transports the firearm.
And what’s out of sight and handled responsibly generally isn’t an issue. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
