Cleaning & Disinfecting PSA AK Wood Furniture

I purchased the pretty red wood furniture for my PSAK GF3 and installed it. I took the rifle to some equipment demos today, and it got handled, dirty, oily and a bit nasty. I have plenty of wood cleaning/polish products for my guitars, but I am wondering what I can use to actually dis-infect it, kill germs, without killing the wood finish. I like mine pretty and shiny. Suggestions? Anyone know if the PSAK wood furniture is polyurethane, or other? Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. This is interesting. I found this and I think I’ll continue to research this question.

I did a little digging also. I am going to err on the side of being a little too safe, to start. I did spray rubbing alcohol on the polymer Zhukov stock, wiped down the metal with alcohol also. I have natural coconut soap that I use for hand soap, single ingredient type stuff. I wet a paper towel, rubbed soap into the paper towel and rubbed the wood. Then I took a cleaner wet towel and wiped off the soapy residue; afterward then drying with a paper towel. The wood looks fine, but I am not sure what I did sterilized anything. It is certainly cleaner than it was.

As a side note, when I sprayed alcohol on the Zhukov, some got on the wood grip and did not seem to cause any damage to the finish.

Hopefully, this helps anyone who might be interested.

Got any tips for my Father in law. He’s worried about his bullets gittin moldy. That’s how he describes tarnished brass🤣 His solution is to just go ahead and shoot’em afore they go bad. Can’t be having no moldy bullets…

You need to find another hobby if you’re shopping on Indiamart :rofl:

Oh and alcohol needs to be 91%

You can get a small UV light wand.

Wasn’t shopping for a damn thing, was wondering why in hell someone was disinfecting guns… It has never occurred to me in my 64 years, and found it hilarious, as did my wife.:us_outlying_islands:

I just lick my guns and build up my immune system.

Just smear on a little peanut butter and have the dog lick it clean… :yum:

But semi-seriously, a wet-wipe might be good. Carrying around disinfectant to clean everything you touch (e.g. door knobs) might cause more health issues than not.

I am involved in the firearms Industry, do a lot of product analysis, demo’s and Instruction. Get enough of other peoples hands on things, and some of it is gross especially if they appear sick. I have a couple of nasty handguns to clean right now, that I use in my permit classes. Wood grips are the same challenge. I cannot seem to get them sanitized enough, lol.

I don’t worry about sanitizing my personal guns or my carry ; )

I figured there was something more in depth. Think about the UV light thing, hospitals use it to kill bacteria. Just protect your eyes.

You will soon realize that we are a bunch of nuts and jokers around here. I’ll admit it, I was trolling, but I swear that this topic has never come up in my lifetime until now, including my 20 years in the military. :us_outlying_islands:

I wasn’t trolling. I really do lick my guns. It doesn’t affect anyone else so my therapist says it’s ok to continue in moderation.

On a serious note. I think the UV wand suggested by @Rufus is by far the best idea in this thread. It’s proven to work. Easy to use, reusable, it’s a one time cost compared to purchasing cleaners or disinfectants on a regular basis. No rags are needed. No pouring and wiping and clean up. It’s also small and rechargeable which would allow you to kill germs at the range before you even pack up those germ covered guns in thier respective bags or cases and loaded in the car and transported home.

As a bonus you could even run the wand over a firearm at the range between participants or students so the next person has a little peace of mind before resting their cheek on a germ ridden buttstock.

I would think being “polished wood” (ok let the jokes on THAT fly…!), you could use Murphy’s Oil Soap or any cleaner safe to use on wood floors. I would stay away from anything that has a degreasing agent in it, or you might find yourself doing a crap ton of work later to restore your finish. That comes from my buddy at work who used to be a cabinet guy in his former life (before he started rescuing people from fires). Anything ok to use on polished/varnished/shellaced surfaces. Clorox wipes were mentioned and I would think that would be a great option (nope, there ain’t a lick of bleach in them…) as we wiped every f-in thing down with them during the height of COVID.

Take care of that sharp beauty and safe shootin!

Boiled linseed oil is good for wood furniture.
