Darned old eyes

I just got in my Dagger and Holosun 407co x2. After mounting the sight I noticed that the ring was a bit blurry. I put my readers on and the ring turned into one big blob. Closed my right eye and looked with my left and the ring was almost perfectly clear. My left eye is clearer with the readers on cuz I have an astigmatism in that eye but the readers do seem a bit too strong for the right eye. I handed the pistol to my 40yr old son and he saw 3 rings overlapping with both eyes! I told him he was old and to get his eyes checked. I then handed the (cleared and checked) gun to my 13yr old grandson and he said he saw a perfectly clear ring with his shiny new eyes.

I guess I need a new set of glasses. I wonder if they’ll mind when I try my glasses on if I check my sights on my pistol!

From what my sister has told me, red dot sights do not work well if you have an astigmatism. The reticle may seem blurry or out of focus.

They may also appear as a star for those of us who have had lasik. OP, turn the brightness down a notch and see if that helps.

Thank you for that right there! I was thinking about getting lasik as an option to put away the readers for at least a couple years. Haven’t started any research yet and now I don’t have to.

They won’t give you any grief, but to be on the safe side… suggest you pop off a round or two into the air beforehand to let them know you mean business.

That’s funny, I don’t care who you are.

The funny thing is I have the astigmatism in my left eye. With the glasses on, that one was almost perfectly clear while my right eye that doesn’t have the astigmatism was blurred to a point it looked like an 8mm dot. I know my readers, they are basically for the astigmatism eye and somewhat over powered for my right eye.

The circle reticle is supposed to be better for people with astigmatism because the eye can pick it up as a shape better or something like that. But my dominant eye is the right eye, without glasses it’s a little blurred but still a ring.

I happen to be one for whom that the circle :o: works really well, whilst the dot is a “hotspot” that I have some issues with. After that discovery, I got a pile of those Holosun 407’s.

I was just down in the shop doing dry fire. The circle seemed a little bit blurry at times but it was a circle as long as I didn’t have my glasses on. With the glasses on it became a dot, still usable. I might take the slide and sight with me when I get my eyes checked next time.

Try some glasses with polarized lenses.

I might try that. I just watched a video from a guy that was talking about astigmatism and shooting and he said that different types of sunglasses with different curvatures might make a correction in the way the light hits the eye. He said even some clear safety glasses might help.

I wish that they put diopters on optical sights like binoculars have. You can adjust for each Eye on binoculars.

Any of my guns that I buy new optics for are now getting the Primary Arms 1x Prism sight.
It has the diopter built in like a scope allowing you to focus it for your eyesight. No more glasses required when using it. Amazing the clarity it gives……as if my eyes were young again.

I have the astigmatism issue also but have found that if I put the center of reticle on the target the shots still go there. Annoying yes, but not really an issue.

While I was dry firing I noticed that when I didn’t focus on the dot but focused on the target and put the dot (circle) on it, I didn’t really notice any blur. I also followed some advise earlier. Instead of the auto adjust I set the emitter to manual, set the light intensity and locked it. It is much better and doesn’t seem to blur as much.

I have a feeling that this is also going to be one of those things where I’ll need to train my brain to see it correctly.

You train your brain all you want….but ultimately…… as we age the tiny muscles that are used to focus debilitate and we slowly lose our ability to focus close up. Of course there are those who will not be affected by this as much as others….similarly like those who will retain a great head of hair…. While others go bald. Training your brain will not keep hair on your head any more than it will retain your close up focus…….but if that means more time on the range burning powder “training your brain”……Iam all for that! Hell yes ! Sign me up for that training …. I am with you.

well, I finally hit the range. One thing I noticed right off was that having the ring set at an intensity for indoors did not work well for outdoors. Duh. I set it back to auto intensity and had no problems. I was sighting it in (which took about 5 minutes) and realized the circle looked great… and I was wearing my “walking around” glasses! I took the glasses off and the ring still looked great. I think I’m getting used to this sight.

I know the sight is supposed to be factory set but this thing was almost dead on out of the box. 10 yards, cold, first 3 shots were centered 1/2" to the left. 4 clicks right and I was on. Back home after spending a couple boxes of ammo I dry fired in my basement for a while and the site worked flawlessly. I think I’m going to like it. The HS407CO X2 gets a thumbs up from me so far.
