I couldn’t wait to turn 18 and buy it (actually I think I was 19 because that’s when I could actually afford my first one). I still have it today almost 3 decades later.
What was yours? Not so much one you were given as a kid, but I’m more thinking about the first one you plopped down money for and said “I’ll take THAT one!”
Mine is a Browning A-500G, semi-auto 12 gauge. Bought it around 1993 I think it was. I’d love to have a count of how many ducks & geese I’ve harvested with that gun over the years with my old man. Love that gun and still use it to this day.
First BP kit I got was a BP Dixie Colt 1851 Navy revolver at 14. First cartridge gun I legally purchased was a police surplus S&W Model 10 38SPC I got at 21, think I paid around $120 or so for it, still got it and expect I will let my son carry it here soon during hunting season.
My dad gave me a couple shotguns and rifles growing up so the first gun I purchased myself was a Ruger Mark handgun. Love that gun. I was actually thinking I needed to shoot that one soon.
Norinco m1911a1 at a gun show. It was the most “meh” 1911 you can image. But it worked 100% of the time. Paid 350, sold it for 350 several years later to buy a stoeger m3500 that i subsequently sold as well and downgraded to a m3000 that i love to this day.
my first was a handgun. I had been given a marlin 60 as a kid, and inherited my grandfathers Rossi .22 pump and his Mossberg 5500 shotgun when he moved to a condo in myrtle beach so i had thought i was good to go on long guns… obviously the bug of collecting hadnt hit me yet. all that said, the very first one i bought was a Glock 21 in .45 of course. Knowing glocks, and what iknow now, i wish i had bought a glock 30s as its a better fit for me. the 21, is a great gun, and i carried it concealed for a while, and then i got into other guns, and hence my love for the 30s size. lol.
i still have my 21, probably will never get rid of it, as it is the one that popped my cherry into buying my own guns, and into the handgun world.
My first pistol was a Ruger P-89. I still have that also. Bought it when I turned 21. It was on consignment at the local sporting goods store for 249.99 It was pretty much brand new. I still need to get mags for it because I still have the factory 10rnd California mags. Lol.
Just a few weeks ago I looked up my 10/22 and P-89 serial numbers on Rugers site and learned they both were manufactured in 1995. Kind of a cool coincidence.
Moss berg 500 12ga. Probably the ugliest gun I own. Has been in more swamps and briar patches than I can count. Rabbits, squirrels, ducks, geese, deer, doves, turkeys, and who knows what else. That old girl has put more meat in the pan than probably all my other Guns combined.
