What was your very first gun and give a little backstory.-
I know this is the “ anything non-firearm related” but i didn’t know where else to post it at.
Mine was an old Brazilian made break barrel 12ga, my dad gave it to me for Christmas when I was 12 you had to pull the trigger guard back to hinge it open.
A German K98 Mauser my grandfather brought back from WW2. It was my first hunting rifle.
Pumpmaster 760 for Christmas when I was little lad. Borrowed some others for a while.
First rifle that was mine mine is a Remington 700 BDL from my dad when I was 12 or 13. Early Christmas present, like before Thanksgiving. Beautiful gun with the ram engraved floorplate (young me wanted it to be a whitetail or something but adult me that enjoys Shiner Beer loves it). Shot great with cheap Winchester Super X for years.
Fast forward to fall 2017 and the first couple shots I took were barely on paper, and then nothing was and couldn’t dial it in. January 2019 I free floated the barrel (those models are notorious for the harmonics getting all screwed up with age–especially in humid environments), installed aluminum pillars, glass bedded the action, and replaced the cheap included scope with a Vortex Crossfire ii 3-9. Took her to the range with a new box of Super X and she was shooting probably nickels at 100 yards and every 4th round or so was a flier. Switched over to Hornady American Whitetail and she was shooting dimes with no fliers. Took four piglets last fall/winter at 10-40 yards, a doe at 225, buck at about 100, and a sow at 150 with seven bullets.
Pillars ready
Had already done the free floating but you can see it there and the pillars set.
Not the prettiest of bedding jobs, but it works and nobody is going to see it besides whoever sees this post and maybe my kid one day.
Tried to upload the whole finished product, but it keeps saying invalid. Ohh well.
Dad gave me a Harrington and Richardson 410 single shot when I was about 12. Was used not new.
Purchased a Savage-Stevens 12 gauge double barrel when I was 14. That gun has taken more ducks, pheasant, quail and sage hens than I can count.
I have both of them in my gun cabinet to this day.
My first was the H&R 20 ga youth model at the same age and I still have mine also.
Edit: added photos from my firearms record files, Model 088, my little brother decided to re-stain the wood while I was in the USMC and made it lighter than it originally was. I also had to re-blue it top-to-bottom as he let it rust. luckily it was all surface rust and no pitting.
4” 686+ circa 1998 without that bullsh!t safety
I sold it in 2004 during a slightly extended layoff at Caterpillar
How I regret that
Backstory? My garage was broken into and my Trek 8500 MTB was stolen, along with my wife’s mid grade Trek
Mine was a top of the line Trek 8500 bonded 7000 series aluminum frame with the heavy duty MTB downhill Spinergy red letter carbon fiber rims, Rockshox Judy XL, Shimano XTR group, and Kore components. It took me a year to source everything and build it
I took some of the insurance money and bought that 686+
What I would actually consider a real gun was a Benjamin .22 cal pellet rifle when I was 5. It was my Dad’s growing up. There is no telling how many squirrels and other small game that I took with it. It will drop a squirrel just as quick as a .22lr. My next rifle was a Remington Speedmaster .22lr when I was 6 that was also my Dads growing up. I didn’t always have ammo for it so my backup was my old Benjamin pellet rifle. .22 cal pellets were cheap so I always had pellets on hand. From 6 on every Christmas one present was always a rifle or shotgun. Some were my Dad’s growing up and others he bought new for me. I always liked the ones that were my Dad’s better than the new ones. Even at a young age I appreciated things that were given to me that were my Dad’s or one of my Grandfathers. I still have my old Benjamin pellet rifle and I still love the old girl.
At 5 years old I was given a Daisy Red Ryder. One of the first movies I remember watching was “Jaws” and after that I wanted to shoot sharks like Sheriff Brody. I never did shoot a shark-just everything else. Chickens, Horses, Cows, Fish, Turtles, Frogs, Snakes, Squirrels and cars passing by. As kids we use to play war and had a standing rule never aim for the head. When the shooting started, we were all aiming for the eyes. It was 1976 and before there was Airsoft there was BB Gun Wars. So much fun with a Daisy Red Ryder.
I did have a Red Ryder and Crossman ten pump .177 pellet gun.
Maybe I should have considered those since others are mentioning them…
Had a Sheridan “Blue Streak” very similar to your Benjamin. It was .20 cal and harder to find pellets, but also slayed many a rodent.
First was a Ruger 10/22 for my 9th birthday. A long time ago, but a good start to a family tradition I hope and believe will be carried on by my offspring.
I had a BB gun at around 5. First actual firearm was given to me by my Dad. Single shot .410. Got my first whitetail with it when I was 8. Still have it and it’s still in great condition. I have several other guns that Dad gifted me but that one has the most memories.
Ithaca M-49 .22 Saddlegun. Single shot, lever action youth rifle. My parents gave it to me for Christmas when I was 11 or 12. It is a pre serial number gun. I still have it.
nice to see how many of us have been able to keep our first firearm and plan on passing it down.
If we are counting bb guns I got my Dad’s Daisy bb gun when I was 4 it was a pump action. My son has it. I don’t remember the model. Some of the other kids wanted to shoot it. It was well made and had a bigger spring because of the pump action. It had a little more power than the lever action. I enjoyed it for a year but when my pellet rifle came into the picture the Daisy got forgotten quick.
A Marlin Model 60. He had one, and thought it would be a good starter rifle.
first weapon i ever used and learned how to use was an m16. first weapon i ever bought myself was a glock17 and an mp15. was more interested in the glock but already knew how to use the carbine. took classes at marksman pistol institute in AZ fell in love with the glock17. i got rid of the mp15 and built several carbines since, but i still have my first pistol its amazing af. steel oem sights, ghost edge disconnector, tungsten guide rod, magpul magwell, thats it and its still just the most perfect thing in my eyes. i carry a 19x now but tbh its because idgaf about it and its almost like my 17
My first gun was a pump action pellet gun. 1st real gun was a 20 gauge shotgun that I do not remember the brand of. My first home defense gun was a Smith and Wesson M&P45 with built in red laser. First semi-automatic rifle was an IWI TAVOR 7 chambered in 7.62x51. My Dad had some old rifles, shotguns and handguns when I was a kid that got stolen. I never had the chance to use them much or even explore what they were. I know he was heartbroken about it because some of them were given to him by his father. A little off topic but just made me think of that.
I had various pellet and BB guns as a kid, but the one that stands out was a Beretta 92 replica pellet pistol which I still have around. I also still have a Red Ryder as well, (duct taped around the handle after all these years). The first “real” gun I shot was a lever action .22lr my grandfather had. It wasn’t much of a gun, and malfunctioned a lot. Nowadays, I understand why that was, but back then, it just seemed like “real” guns were a bit of a hassle in real life.
I later learned on the M-16 and really wanted a version of one, but that was right about the time of the Clinton ban, so prices were insane (sound familiar?). I kinda lost interest for a while after that since I had moved to a much more populated suburban area, and paintball satisfied my urge to shoot stuff at that time.
My first actual gun was an LWRC M6A2 thanks to the excellent salesmanship of Mr. B.H. Obama, who convinced me I needed to have one, for when western civilization collapses
. I’ve since sold that one, and have picked up more refined versions as my “go to” carbines now. I also picked up my first pistol around that same time, a Beretta PX4. I’ve since sold that one as well and have converted mainly to Glock for my pistols.
While I caught the bug late, I definitely got a good strong case of “the sickness.” I’ve bought and sold a ton since finally getting in the game some 12 years ago.
Man that really sucks. I can fully understand your dad’s feelings. I absolutely can’t stand a thief or a vandal. One thing I think that the Islamic culture has gotten right is the penalty for stealing. They start by chopping off fingers. If you don’t learn your lesson then a hand gets chopped off. Some would say that is extreme, I say it is a very strong deterrent to worthless douchbag thiefs.
