Wheelgun Appreciation Thread

I don’t know why, but I’ve always had a big time preference for revolvers. I love the way they feel, love the way they look, and I’m a better shot with them. They just get the juices flowing, I’m going to share a few of my more recent acquisitions and I’d love to see all of yours.

Just picked up this guy the other day, a new-style Python, 4.25" barrel. Always wanted one over the years, wasn’t planning on buying at the moment, but came across a deal I couldn’t pass up. If you read the “get it off your chest” thread you can get the entire story, but amusingly enough I thought I was buying a 6" version, but the seller messed up his listing. I ended up deciding to keep it instead of sending it back, it’s a really nice piece. The smoothness of the cylinder and trigger are top notch on these, the finish is great, and I consider them artwork.

Found one of these online last year, a 6" Taurus 689. Relatively unknown gun, Taurus stopped producing them in the late 90s. From the research I’ve done it seems like they were trying to create a clone lovechild of a S&W 686 and a Python with the cylinder release, lines, and vent ribs. It actually has an excellent trigger and shoots very well, although the grips have a bit of an cheap smooth feel to them, it doesn’t affect how it shoots.

A 6" Ruger Security-Six. This was the predecessor to the GP100, this one in particular I narrowed down to being a late 70s model from the serial. Found it at a range last year, they got it from an estate sale. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in decades but the timing was right and lockup was tight. Got it for $400 and change, a few hours of elbow grease and it cleaned right up. Part of my love for wheelguns came from my father (RIP,) he was an unabashed Ruger fanboy and would’ve loved this one. Picked it up for him more than anything.

This was a pawn shop special, a 7.5" Ruger Redhawk .44. Pretty much the exact same circumstances as the Security, this one was sitting in a case dirty and neglected, priced very cheap, but all the mechanicals felt great, so I snatched it up. As I suspected it wasn’t abused so much as just never cleaned or polished. I constantly switch between wood and rubber grips on it, prefer the latter for shooting but the former for aesthetics.

Got a few more but don’t have good pictures of them at the moment. Hoping soon to add more Colts to the collection, an Anaconda and King Cobra. Also have my eye on a Single Six .22LR/.22mag convertible and if the stars ever align I’d love a Manurhin MR73 and a Korth Mongoose but I’m not sure if I’ll ever pony up the premium for those two.

Yeah I like the Smith and Wesson 686, 629 and M29. :+1:t2:

You see endless debates between the 686 and the GP100 and to me it’s dumb, they’re both excellent revolvers and very few people who buy either are disappointed in them.

Generally prefer Rugers over Smiths myself, but to Smith’s credit, their cylinder release mechanism is a better design IMO. It’s a pretty natural position for your thumb to just slide forward, on Rugers you kind of have to reach over the release and push it down.

I love Colts, but theirs are the worst of the three.

It’s so pretty and shiny. I can’t keep my pretty guns shiny. It’s why I like black guns. :joy:

I’m the opposite, I LOVE stainless guns. Nothing I like more than taking them out of the safe and shining them up with Flitz or Mothers Mag Polish, really making them pop. A blued finish just doesn’t do it for me the same way.

I bought it new in 2007, has never been fired, sits in the Smith & Wesson box, I have got it out a handful of times to clean it is all…

Oh man…I would’ve had to have fired it at least a couple times. You’re stronger than I am.

I would say don’t shoot it. You would be surprised to find out what never fired firearms with the original box might be worth. Have it appraised. May or may not have a similar situation, albeit a much older revolver.

Very nice. I had a 4" GP for a while, I originally got it off a friend and I could tell he wanted it back, so I traded it back to him for a PC Charger and a 10/22. I’ll get another eventually.

What model Taurus is that?

I have a very similar looking stainless 605, but it’s an exposed hammer.

If you’re ever interested in moving that 4" King Cobra, please let me know first. Very pretty gun.
