Kind of surprised there’s no 1911 picture thread on here.
Went into my gun safe today just looking around, and grabbed my 1911 I keep in a zip up case. I probably haven’t had this gun out in 4+ years. I somehow about forgot about it, even though I know I have it.
It’s an 09 or 2010 Colt Combat Elite. I bought it in my mid-20’s. It’s my only 1911. It was my second handgun purchase. Cost me about a grand. I added a few mods to it. I wanted a Colt. Kind of ended up wishing I had waited and grabbed a 2011 year model to get the 100 year anniversary model.
I grew up getting a decent amount of experience with 1911’s, and probably as much as any other handgun, but it’s been several years since I’ve messed with one, and it just seemed foreign to me today. I think I was too used to them as I never used to feel that a 1911 felt dated compared to other guns, but I noticed that to drop a magazine or the slide I pretty much had to change my grip on the gun, and kick it on its side in my palm a bit to reach those controls. Obviously a 1911 points great, has a good thumb safety, and man I forgot just how good even a mid-level Series 80 trigger is compared to a $150 aftermarket Glock trigger. I wish my aftermarket Glock triggers were close to being as crisp as this thing, but that would likely necessitate more than just a trigger safety.
I also never realized how much more mechanical a 1911 feels compared to newer pistols. Even compared to my CZ75 and GP100. IDK, I guess it’s the bare metal frame, with the grip safety, the slight side to side wiggle of the trigger, how the thumb safety clicks in and out of place, the audibles that racking the slide and locking the hammer back makes, the crisp trigger break with barely any take up, and zero sponginess. It’s just very mechanical, and very cool. I forgot just how cool these guns were. It seems to me like 1911 popularity has gotten much smaller than it used to be. Probably due to 1911 fanboys acting like everything else was inferior to 1911, but the fact is these are some really cool guns, and they can be used as a everyday, self defense weapon if that what you want. I’d say it aged or modernized better than other guns from its era and even some that came after it. IDK is a Browning High Power a more practical choice than a 1911? I don’t think something like a Luger P08 would be as practical of a choice in todays market.
At the age of about 11, the 1911 was the first pistol I ever shot (my best friend’s dad’s). I have no idea what the make/model may have been - it was the late '60s. My first shot was great, but got overconfident after that
Never did buy one, but I’ve been considering a modern Hi Power. I used to collect old guns (to “save” money), but sold them all after figuring out that modern weapons just work better for me. Although, kept my old Yugo SKS and a Winchester .22lr/s rifle made in about 1927.
Kimber Micro 9. The two tone is my EDC most days. I carry the Raptor from time to time just because it’s so damn cool. The ESV is going to my daughter because she loves it and also wants the gray, which I’m probably going to give her for her birthday in February. I’m proud that both my kids are excellent with handguns. My daughter is probably one of the best handgun shooters I’ve ever been around.
careful with those gun rugs. i had a Colt Officers model of Satin Nickel and last time i took it out the finish was ruined.
i will post a pic tomorrow.
i am a bit of a 1911 enthusiast. I have a few of them.
This is the first 1911 I ever built. It is a PSA forged Stainless frame and slide. It has a Storm Lake Threaded Match barrel. I love the pistol. its super crisp and a sweet shooter.
Here’s my PSA Blued Premium 1911, I’ve never shot it since i’ve bought it new at PSA. I bought it because i had a stainless PSA i built, but I didnt have a blued one from PSA, so i wanted one built by PSA that was blued… and thus i have this one :
i may post others depending on how the whim takes me. let’s see some others of y’alls. I tell ya the one i want i dont have is the Colt USMC tan gun they did for the Marine Corps bout 10 years ago or so. they sell it commercially, or a version of it now, just never had the $ at the right time to pick it up.
Here was a friend of mines M1911A1 that he got from an Uncle of his wife having passed, and gave to me for a few days to try and find some info on. It ended up being a 1943 year model. It’s a Remington Rand. Y’all would be surprised just how accurate this old 1911 is compared to a modern counterpart. This gun was a little tack driver. The slide and frame were mixed matched.
i have one like that that i got from the CMP a few years ago…
its a 1943 Colt frame and internals, with a 1944/45 Remington Rand Slide and internals to it. Quite the historical piece knowing this firearm was in WWII, Korea, and possibly vietnam/desert storm.
i thought id never find this 1911 thread. here are 2 70 series Colts. the top one was EDC for a while, notice the sweat dulled grip? still a great shooter.
the lower one. well the seller told me there were less than 50 rds fired. i didnt fire 50 either. i did change the sights. here is a tip. never let someone drill a hole for a front sight if they just bought the jig.
