Gun safes for handguns

I’m looking for a safe to store multiple handguns, not the nightstand safes. I am saving for a large safe, like a 64 gun type. I would really like one for each task. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Right now I’m thanking a Tracker from Home Depot for the larger safe. The handgun safe I’m having more trouble with.

ive not seen the home despot safes, but i have seen the safes that they have at academy sports, and t hose are usually pretty good especially if you catch them on sale at like black friday or something… other than that, i was always a big fan of Liberty safes, although recently they’ve had some issues iirc.

Tractor Supply has good deals on safes.

yeah ive heard that… i always forget about tractor supply

Tractor Supply is where i got my safe.

I got one a couple years ago at Menard’s. At sale price and 11% rebate.

Tractorsupply.com charges $220 to deliver to the front door!

Liberty got into trouble for handing over the master combo to the FBI without a warrant. They got the message and fixed the problem. I would really like a Liberty model as they are made in the USA. Right now I’m finding safe delivery is a racket to pad profits!

I think that the closest Menard’s is about 800 miles from me!

While that works, I don’t get the idea of having something that can be carried off.

I’m hoping to find something like this but with user experiences.

I got a fatboy Jr. Near identical dimensions, mine might be a bit longer on the fire rating, though i sould need to look that up.
Aside from my local safe vendor telling me to not get an electronic lock as he showed me 3 × 5 gallon buckets of failed digital key pads. He subsequently changed mine back to a mechanical dial, before delivery.
I have several friends and a 07 FFL that have never had issue with digital locks on their collections of safes.

Looks like a good safe.

Pickup truck or trailer. TS will load it for you.
Wheeled furniture dolly (cheap at Harbor Freight) or appliance hand trucks ( rent at Home Depot or Uhaul) with a couple of friends or college kids.
@fsuscotsman

yeah they did.
honestly what you should do is what @1911 did. he’s got all the information on a safe… he picked out and its a total custom job… thats how you get a safe that is truly going to protect your stuff. maybe he’ll chime in here with his knowledge about safes.

Greg @1911 posted this not long ago. There is a link to a video from the guy he got his safe from. Good information.

yep exactly

Gun safes aren’t safes. They are deterents THAT’S ALL. A Liberty Safe is better than most name brand gun safes. If you saw how easy it is to get into all of these safes that people are buying you would cringe. Don’t get me wrong they are better than nothing especially if you have a house fire. Then again most of those safes have drywall as the fire deterrent. As the safe heats up the drywall releases moisture that cools the interior by evaporation. Once the drywall dries out which doesn’t take that long the interior of the safe heats up and finally flashes over. A higher quality safe has cement which does the same thing as sheetrock but concrete has a whole lot more moisture content therefore keeps the safe interior cooler longer. The concrete also has the added benefit of making the safe harder to get into and makes it heavier so it isn’t as likely to be taken.

A real commercial safe is either rated as a TL15 or a TL30 by the Underwriters Laboratory. If the safe doesn’t have one of these listing then you can consider it as a deterrent. I really was shocked at many of the gun safes that I thought here on the higher end of gun safes weren’t they just looked prettier. When you consider the cost of guns today spending a little more $$$ and doing your own research can help you a good bit. If you live anywhere in South Carolina or North Carolina Mike Griffin of Griffin Enterprises is the man to go to for an education and a safe. You can buy a new safe of his own design or buy one of his hundreds of used safes that he will upgrade and customize for you for a very reasonable price considering what you will be getting. I went with a older higher quality commercial safe the Mike is also upgrading the entine locking system with the newer repetitive re-lockers and upgraded electrical combination lock. Having a manual dial lock or electric lock doesn’t really matter. What matters is the quality of the lock, what it is made of and it’s complexity. Mike has all kind of different sizes of safes. I got the largest sized safe that I could get into my house and at 4000lbs it isn’t going anywhere once it is set in place. Mike will also custom build an interior for you how you want it set up. All of his interiors are adjustable so you can refigure it to however you want.

I’m getting an education but the trip to NC isn’t feasible. I’ve known all along that these weren’t “safes” in the real sense of the word. I did spooky stuff for Uncle Sam in the day. Mostly the fire and water won’t matter to me. Mine concern is theft deterrent. Mostly for my handguns as I have very few long guns. I just want them there when I come back after a trip or some such.

I’ll make a decision soon, but am leaning Liberty as they are US made.

Unfortunately, all this may be moot as I just got diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel in both wrists and nerve impingement in both elbows! This really sucks.

Thanks for all the help!
Ron

Carpal tunnel in both of mine as well and a trigger thumb :+1:. It’s a real thing.
I finally had surgery on my right but I’ve put off the left for now. Surprisingly it just went away. I think it’s nerves.
The surgery was a easy, simple procedure.
Recovery was about a year before I had full use without pain.
I waited too long to have the surgery done and have some loss of feeling and numbness in a couple of fingers due to nerve damage.
Best of luck and I’ll be happy to help you anyway I can. Such a miserable pain to be in.

So onto handguns. I always carried 45s but had to go to 9mm because of this .
