beautiful guns. i had a no4mk2 once upon a time ended up trading it off… kinda glad i did, as i dont miss it, and i didnt really shoot it ever.
Beautiful collection of Enfields!
NICE!!! I’ve got a #5 from my Granddad. Had a #4 years ago that was just over a hundred bucks. Ammo is just too much or too scarce to play with the JC much.
The first real firearm I ever owned was SMLE. When I was about 12 I traded a hen and her baby chicks to a neighbor for it.
I’m getting old. This stuff is becoming interesting.
you got a deal there in my opininon
When I was in college, there was a huge influx of unissued No. 4 Mk 2’s that came in but I didn’t have the disposable income to justify buying one. I’m still kicking myself over it.
Yes, mine is one of those. It was never fired other than proof firing. From what info I can gather the one I have was part of a lot manufactured for the RAF after WW2 as a make work project and went straight into warehouses.
i think i remember about that time… was it oh, 15 or so years ago? I know they had some irish overruns i think they were that were never fired, never rearsenaled, etc and they were practically brand new, wrapped in paper never issued. i wished i could have gotten one of those back then. instead i settled for a 250.00 enfield no4mk2 that was pakistani of all things. I eventually traded it off, but it was fun while i had it. Ammo wasnt cheap though… so no love lost really.
Yep. Mine was full of grease and wrapped in a wax paper or oiled paper. As I recall they were selling for $150 at the time and came with a bayonet. I think I got mine from SOG.
yeah the wax or oiled paper was a darkend yellowish gold color if i remember on those… i wish i had gotten 2 of them back in the day, one to use and one to sit on a shelf still wrapped somewhere.
Old thread for a ol No.4 MK1
I have not found any import marking. Battle scarred was my first impression ![]()
Inherited a .303 manufactured in 1916 by the Royal Small Arms factory at Enfield Lock, England. It was sporterized at some point. It is a SMLE MK III*. It belonged to my wife’s Dad and it was given to him by his Son. Well my brother in law knew that I liked it because it was one: Military, two: Old, and three: Owned by my old buddy (wife’s Dad). So, brother in law gave it over to me. He knows that I will be a good steward, and someday I will most likely give it back to him, he’s 12 years younger than me. I have about 120 rds of ammunition for it.
I have been researching it’s history and lineage and while it is nice the way it is, am considering returning it to it’s original issue condition. I am not going to break the bank, if I do infact choose to do it. But the original stock and hardware and 17" bayonet would be awesome.
@1911
What say ye?
if i were you id try to put her back in her military livery.
never a fan of sporterized rifles.
It isn’t worth much right now other than as a 303 hunting rifle. Many of the stocks that are considered sporterized still has the origional stock it was just modified. Unfortunately back when many of these rifles were sporterized these rifles were a dime a,dozen and there were a bunch floating around from GI bring backs. Nobody thought about something being collectable one day back then. It will always be worth more in the issued condition as opposed to being sporterized. The pictures are too small to make much out as far as the engraving and proof marks.
I shot my first deer with an enfield. It was a great gun.
Just tap on a picture it automatically enlarges, and you can pinch zoom with fingers on your phone, don’t know about PC. I’ve never used anything but my phone for the forum.![]()
I know they just cut the stock down and removed hardware parts to make the rifle look closer to a modern (1960’s🤣) era hunting rifle. This one wasn’t a bring back war souvenir. It has the Birmingham BNP stamps stating pressure tested, and caliber, etc. for transfer from Arsenal to public for sale in England.
I am not an expert, but have been doing quite a bit research on this rifle, it’s origins and variants and different manufacturers in the past.
I was wondering if anyone had leads on furniture, I’ve done a lot of hunting and getting feel for prices. Old pieces parts are available here and there, and brand new unfinished stock pieces are also available.
Obviously I would rather have period correct stock and hardware, but right now, I am just figuring how much, sourcing, etc. Any help is appreciated. Maybe easier and cheaper to buy a complete, original rifle?

Leonard I have a few contacts and websites that I can go to to see if they have any original or surplus stocks. I have a pretty good library on this era of military arms. If you want to know something specific I will see if I can find any additional info. To me what you are doing is all part of the fun of owning these great old arms that our grandfather, great-grandfather and uncles used in war. These type of things have always fascinated me.
