Hey Rusty and Jason. I’ve tried 4 different types of HP in my AK-V. Hornady critical defense, sig v-crown, IMI die cut HPs and fiochi 124 grn hps. All had feed issues except for the fiochi. Several hundred rounds with zero malfunctions. I seemed to have found my personal AK-V hollow point unicorn. Hope this helps guys. Have fun shooting.
tbh i haven’t found a round that hasn’t ran out my akv… but aac 115gr xtp is perfection, out the akv, definitely out my pistol, and even out the pcc with zero issues…
Only other pcc I have is s&w fpc, and it runs fmj and hp flawlessly, haven’t tried flat tipped ammo(never used any). It might be so good because it is more pistol than pcc.
Anyone know if polishing the feed ramp would help and or if it would void any warranty?
Wont necessarily void the waarranty unless you make substantial changes to the feed ramp. May or may not help. My question would be this: is this the weapon you would choose in an emergency? If not, does it matter whether or not it will run hp ammo?
So it depends on the situation. Inside the house I could see myself using this. Not outside the house as much. Regardless of that, I wouldn’t really want to keep a firearm that can’t accept 50+% of the ammo made in that caliber. If I only wanted a range toy, I wouldn’t have spent $1k. That is me personally, not saying that will be the same outlook that others have.
At the end of the day thats what i settled on. Not a deal breaker because Mr. Sig and Mr. Daniel have me covered. If crap hit the fan, though, i wouldnt have any problems with slinging fmj out of my akv. Our military seems to do ok with it.
So I’m not saying fmjs can’t be used defensively /offensively, but we also have more effective ammo now and as a civilian I’m not bound by the Hague convention about what ammo I can use. Not to be too defensive, but I feel like this is the same argument people use about 1911s, well they won 2 world wars, so just use that.
It kind of is, but as been stated, 9mm AKs and ARs are notoriously finicky. People aren’t saying use FMJs because FMJs won old wars, they’re saying use 'em because that’s what works best in the platform.
I have a Ruger PC Charger that runs HPs just fine and I use it in a similar manner as I imagine most people want to use their ARVs, but I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea with the completely different controls.
Exactly. AR and AK platforms, as well as other guns made on a 60 yr old pattern, were designed to run with FMJs. Yes, ammo has gotten better…but the basic design of those guns has not changed enough to accomodate everything. Some will work, some will require significant modification.
