Hi all, 1st post. Usually I just lurk, however I just added a second Jakl to my collection; a 13.7” Jakl 5.56 rifle pin and weld. Upon breaking it down for initial cleaning I noticed that the attachment for the piston to the carrier is not solid, it has quite a bit of play. This is in contrast to my 300BO Jakl pistol whose piston acts as a solid extension of the carrier. Is this by design? It causes a bit of problems during the re-assembly process as the piston wants to bind up while being re-inserted into the upper. I haven’t had a second to shoot this yet, so unclear if it’ll cause any functional issues. Thanks for the replies!
Welcome to the forum! I’m sure you will get a reply soon…l for one do not possess one…yet.
Can you post some pics?
Thanks for the welcome ![]()
I know it’s kinda hard to tell from the pic, it’s not the easiest thing to show in a picture. The movement is all four directions. It’s not massive. I traced the extremes of movement in 2 directions to help illustrate the amount of play….
Is there maybe supposed to be a roll pin or spring pin in the hole closest to the piston? There’s a spring pin behind it on the other non-parallel side a little behind….
welcome to the forums!!!
I dont yet have my Jakl in 556 so i cant look at mine to tell you if it is supposed to or not supposed to.
Perhaps @Anthony_PSA or @Josiah_PSA can ofer us some insight until then.
My 10.5"-barrel version has a roll pin behind the piston, like you mentioned it probably should, and doesn’t appear to be loose. Maybe PSA could send you one to see if that makes the wiggle go away? Mine is solidly stout and doesn’t move at all.
Edit: Are you able to pull the piston out since there’s no pin (which appears to hold it in)? That might be a little worrisome if you can.
Thanks nvpurk. Does your shorter barrel have two roll pin holes (1 on opposite sides of the carrier arm) behind the piston? My 13.7 has two, but my 300 BO has one. I’m not at home now, but fairly positive I couldn’t pull the piston out without removing the one pin that is installed. I’ll have to try tonight when I get home. It feels like the larger spring pin that exists is what captures the piston and the other one that appears to be missing may be needed to keep the lateral movement down, but I’m just guessing and haven’t tested that theory. It’s an easy enough install to punch one in there if I can get confirmation from someone as to what should be there (if anything) and the size.
Are you talking about the hole on the right side on the picture? Mine doesn’t have that hole (10.5", 300 BO). The piston is only about 2" long, so maybe that’s why. The roll pin looks really similar in size to the Bolt Hold Open Latch pivot pin.
Yup, that’s the second hole I was talking about. My 8” 300BO doesn’t have it either. I have a feeling they redesigned the piston / carrier to accommodate longer barrel lengths due to the larger piston and the second hole in the carrier arm. Thanks for confirming though!
Was hoping PSA support would see the thread and chime in, but doesn’t look that way. Off to create a ticket.
PSA does not have customer service members in the forum ![]()
Let us know what you find out! Very interesting issue.
Good to know, thanks!
If they did, this place would be a constant CS inquiry and it would get out of hand super quick.
Putting this here in case anyone has similar questions or concerns. Support says this is expected behavior and by design. They sent a small video I’ll try and attach here as well as screenshot from their communication. Thanks for the assist guys, time to send some lead.
Thanks for letting us know! That’s good information to (try to) remember.
I don’t suppose that roll pin gets all that much force put on it.
