Is anyone else having issues with the GF3 not excepting magpul P-Mags? Just received this AK and want to like it so much but it only excepts the one PSA magazine sent with it. Circle 10 mag fits but I have to put a lot of force into it and it won’t except the Bulgarian mags (polymer & metal).
Lots of reports of the magpuls having issues with a variety of AK patterned Rifles. One solution (which I had to do on an AR10 pmag) is to sand it down. See where the lug is hitting and start there.
I bought 5 PMAGs after I got my AKP. 4 fit fine and 1 needed some filing on the bottom of the rear tab. That one is the best fitting mag I have. I honestly prefer a little filing because you don’t have to worry about it being too loose fitting,
Yea so I took out the bolt carrier to see why it wasn’t excepting it and it looks like the rivet is ever so slightly to far forward and stopping some magazines from being able to fit right.
I’m more inclined to say it’s a mag issue over a gun issue. Plenty of GF3s work with lots of mags, and I doubt PSA is just eyeballing where the rivets go…
@Jwallace Welcome to the forums.
My brother had this issue with his GF3. The magazine release was slightly canted which prevented the mags from locking in. You either need to file the locking lug on the magazines that don’t fit, or file the mag release itself.
I have 2 GF3’s and they lock up every mag I’ve tried.
AK magazine fit is mostly determined by the relationship between the magazine catch and the size of the lug on the back of the magazine.
- Since AKs do NOT have a military Specification on precision sized parts, often hand fitting is required………as a result when AKs are built after the trigger guard & magazine catch are installed……magazine fitting is tested and the top edge of the catch might have to be “Hand Filed” in order to perfectly fit the desired magazine.
- Like AKs….AK magazines also have no precise military specific size that manufactures all follow……they are all close enough….and good enough….however they all have minor variations.
- That said…if your AK fits your Pmags and your happy with them….your fortunate……cause they are inexpensive and plentiful.
If however you prefer Bulgarian mags and they fit tight……a little bit of “hand filing” can give you the perfect fit. You could hand file the catch
which is also going to affect the fit of your Pmags……but if you just have a couple of Bulgarian mags……and mostly Pmags….then you could opt to “Hand File” the bottom of the rear lug on the magazine to get your perfect fit.
With this method you can get most any magazine to fit and operate reliably in your AK.
I caution you…… to closely examine the fit of the parts you may be working on……and Understand how and why it’s too tight or binding. Then the use of a file and some sandpaper is usually all that’s needed to fit almost any parts on an AK. Avoid the temptation to use a dremel tool ! !
That dremel can easily remove too much material…too quickly …… In fitting AK parts….good, small sharp files and some sand paper work for almost everything.
Here is a Romanian 20 round “Tanker” magazine that did not lock into my PSA-AK. With a small hand file……
in less than one minute….it fits perfectly now…it catches comfortably…no wobble or wiggle front to back or left to right.
- Never file on the TOP of the lug . The top of the lug keeps the magazine alignment straight.
I’ve got my PSAK GF3 I ordered in June of 2019, and had somewhat the same issue. The only problem I’ve had with mags to date, is the Pmag MOE, the metal lined gen 2 Pmags all fit fine. I bought a 10 pack of the Magpul AK MOE’s and three of them just wouldn’t rock and lock in. I did the above, and filed/sanded some of the plastic off on the BOTTOM of the lug, NEVER the TOP! Seriously friend, NEVER THE TOP OF THE LUG. They all fit perfectly, and have fed reliably since.
Pmags have fit fine in all of my psa ak’s… now what does not fit in them well are the circle 10 polymers
