Every round of the FNH 27gr loads STILL fails to eject. I have to rack the slide to eject the brass and load the next round. Federal American Eagle 40gr rounds fail to eject every 4 or 5 rounds or stove pipe.
This has already been back from RMA, but obviously they didn’t fix the problem. They said they shot two 23 rd mags through it. ??? I filled out the RMA form last Monday and still waiting for a response.
Anybody else have this problem?
Are you limp wristing it? If you RMA’d it and they sent it back to you then there is something unique you are doing. Failure to eject on a rock is not a common complaint.
They’re not using the 27gr FNH ammo I’m using to test fire. I’m not limp wristing.
Red box or blue box 27? I ask because I imagine they have enough 27 blue in the warehouse. Did they specify what they tested it with? @adonai_mine
Blue.
I was told they use two when test firing: Fiocci Range Performance 40gr FMJ, and Federal American Eagle 40gr FMJ. I wasn’t told exactly which they used specifically for mine.
Heavier bullets will typically generate more recoil impulse than lighter. If recoil has been bled out of the system then the slide may not cycle far back enough for the case head to hit the ejector. In the cases where just enough energy remains for the case head to strike the ejector but not quite enough to lever the case out of the action it will typically manifest as an empty case stovepipe.
Many things could be bleeding energy out of the system. As mentioned a few posts up, a “limp wrist” can act as a shock absorber and suck energy out. Dirt, grime, burs, rough machining, or “stickiness” at the mating parts of the slide and the frame can pull energy out. Some people will grip the gun in such a way as the slide may very slightly drag on their hand(s) and pull energy out. If the gun is kinda on the “edge” (or “finely tuned” to certain ammo), then a lighter weight bullet or lower energy ammo can fail to provide enough energy to make a recoil-operated gun properly recoil.
Here’s what I would do if it were my gun.
- Clean the ever-love’n snot out of it. Use toothbrushes or even bronze brushes an, if you have it, an Ultrasonic cleaner. Really scrub any and all mating surfaces and make sure that there aren’t any burs or rough places. Mating surfaces are not just the rails but include things like the barrel aperture in the slide. You get the idea.
- Buy some different ammo. Find the hottest ammo you can. 40 gr. bullets are a good place to start. If that works, you can look at downgrading to 35 gr. etc. until you get to ammo your gun doesn’t like.
- Try shooting with a death grip. Crank that grip on and be double-plus sure that your wrists are locked. This test may include letting a buddy or experienced shooter take a shot or two. I was having trouble with a pistol impacting ever so slightly to the left; about 2" at 15’ so I called the RSO over and asked him to run a few rounds to see if I needed to go back to my trigger control basics before fiddling with the sights. Same thing here. If someone else shoots the gun and it runs fine, then the problem isn’t the gun.
- Might also consider trying a different mag. In some very rare cases, poor magazine fit can cause the top round in the mag or the top of the mag itself to drag on the empty case being extracted. They will almost always drag some so this is unlikely the issue, but still. If the gun is having problems running, one of the first places to look is usually the magazine.
Good luck.
Peace favor your sword,
Kirk
I just read an article about this. Yesterday… .
They said that about the ATI Titan .45 acp ( 3.1" 1911) it has a tendency to short cycle if you don’t have a firm grip on it. And you must lock your arms grip hand pushing away and other hand pulling towards you. Otherwise the frame will travel rearward along with the slide, and it will fail to cycle properly. Recoil and a semi auto pistol mechanics are dynamic and are a ∆ (variable and or changing value) in Sir Issac Newton’s realm.

P.S. As a good buddy on this forum told me, and a lot of other folks around the interweb - Replace recoil spring assembly with the Kimber Ultra Carry one piece assembly. Turns a $349 hand gun into a $900 one. Several Kimber owners own words… That and high quality magazines.
My dumb self hasn’t done this yet, but I will. I have convince myself that it is more important than holding onto a dollar

Those two cartridges are essentially the same thing.
You need to do this with Desert Eagles too, that’s why they have a rep as unreliable, because people grip them incorrectly so they don’t cycle. It states to use the exact grip you described in the instructions.
Not sure why ATI went with that screw idea in the recoil spring.
because Fiocci Range Performance 40gr is quality ammo, what are they supposed to test fire it with?? lmao… sounds like you already know the problem is your ammo, why did you make that selection?
i want a rock, and electricity… so maybe not this very next pay check but, soon… cant show anyone the model i want y’all buy it before i can!!
You’re easy. Its the most colorful pimped out model. (Probably jinxed myself and I’m wrong)
I bet it’s the green with copper barrel
Per PSA, only lube with CLP. Any lubricants with higher viscosity can slow down the slide and cause Failures to eject and stovepipes.
I can’t break my old habit of using grease (granted sparingly and mixed with oil on the Rocks) on the sliding surfaces. Haven’t had an issue with mine.
you at least going to buy me dinner first?
I too have this problem. That makes my Rock “range” only.
Firm up your grip and change your ammo. The 5.7 is not a tilting barrel design like glocks and other polymer handguns. Dont shoot it like those.
Just because it’s soft shooting doesn’t mean you can handle it loose.
