Sounds like your Handguard retainer is also loose. If it moves around even after you have the lever all the way down, it is defective. I am experiencing the same issue as you and have initiated an RMA

Verify that the lever is up AND that the plate it controls in completely vertical. Additionally, tip the barrel down. Lastly, and I’m sorry to ask this, did you remove the bolt and piston first?
Release the front nut which keeps it tight against trunnion.
