My rifle came with this. How the hell do you remove it? My lever is up to remove the gas tube. The thing won’t budge not even one bit no matter what. Even undid the screw thing on it with no results. No idea what that screw thing even does.
Lever up, and you should be able to pull it up. Pics would help.
Does not move or budge. Also lower handguard is loose which is the reason I’m trying to remove it. Rifle has never been fired.
Look down from the top where the lever is. See if you can find the sweet spot on the lever that lets the rear of the gas tube up.
You may have to jiggle the lever a little.
Looks like the gas tube has a tensioner near the gas block. May need to mess with that to get the gas tube out.
Mine is the same way. This is funny because I was going to start a thread with the same question.
My bottom handguard rattles like crazy and also the gas tube wont budge. It literally looks like they slide the gas tube on the trunnion then slide the front sight on and wedge the gas tube in place. Im not new to AKs so understand the process to remove and know sometimes they are hard to remove the first few times. But my AKV is a whole different story
Me too man. I had an Arsenal SLR106 and that things tube lever was stiff as hell. Needed to use a tool to move it every time. Not the PSAK556 however, I can move the lever easy. It’s just the tube will not move. If I can’t figure it out, guess I’m just going to take it to a gunsmith to get rid of them both and replace with an ultimak on top and Midwest industries Mlok handguard.
@Cxerphax is this a tensioner?
I have no idea man. If it is what should I do with it?
Figure out if it is spring loaded. I unfortunately have not messed with that rail in person, just trying to help you out.
The Midwest industries gas tube has a tensioner on the gas block side that threads in/out as needed. This one looks similar, so I’m assuming it threads as well?
I think youre spot on. I seen a Midwest Industries rail in a video a bit ago and it looks the same. I haven’t been able to open the safe and play with mine cause I’m just busy tonight. Hopefully confirm in the morning.
Looking forward to how it goes man. Please post back here with the results.
@Cxerphax that part i circled looks like it has wrench flats. Have you tried turning it?
I’ll give it a try as well in the morning. Thanks for the suggestion
Confirmed.
Loosen screw, but dont remove (red circle)
Rotate “nut” with wrench (red arrow)
That shortens the gas tube and it slides out as usual. Feeling kinda dumb right now. But I’ve never seen one like this that’s expandable.
Thanks to the OP for allowing me to thread jack lol. Thanks @GuitarGuy as usual.
Welcome. This is where i put my engineering problem solving skills to use.
So I was finally able to get it off as well. Marred it up pretty good even with a towel over it as I turned. Thank god the barrel is ok. I confirmed that Handguard retainer is unfortunately defective and the culprit of the loos Handguard. Will need to initate a warranty claim
What’s wrong with the handguard retainer? I didnt mess with mine. Just confirmed removing the gas tube and put her away. Just to busy to play guns today. My lower handguard is very loose and rattles like crazy.
